Is Manor Lords Good | GAME REVIEW

User Rating: 8.6

At first glance, Manor Lords might not jump off the screen. It’s a niche medieval real-time strategy game focused on village construction and resource management. But once you fire it up and get a taste of the incredible detail and immersion, you quickly realize this is something special. This review will give you an idea of what to expect from Manor Lords.

Astonishing Depth for an Indie Title

The depth is astounding for an early-access title still in active development by a single developer. Every element of running your rural medieval settlement is a multi-step process carried out by individual villagers with clear roles. Building a simple lumberjack camp isn’t just a quick construction. You literally watch workers haul logs in with oxen, clear land, gather materials, and erect the timber frame structures piece by piece.

A Captivating Community Simulation

What makes Manor Lords so addictive is just kicking back and watching your self-sustaining colony naturally unfold, grow, and develop its own systemic routines. There’s an undeniable satisfaction to the simplified resource management gameplay loop combined with the vivid world simulation. It has a relaxing yet compelling investment cycle.

Incredible Attention to Detail

While not the first village simulator of its kind, Manor Lords puts its forerunners like Banished to shame in terms of fidelity and realistic portrayal. Every single element was clearly crafted with passion, not an ounce of cut corners or compromises.

Survive the Harsh Realities

The core gameplay sees you ensuring your settlers have enough food, firewood, clothing, tools, and goods to survive and expand. It has all the cold harsh realities you’d expect from the peasant life sim genre – starvation, freezing winters, illness, and more. But the vibrant simulation gives every struggle weight and purpose.

Impressive Scope for an Early Demo

For an early demo, Manor Lords already has impressive scope too. Zooming out reveals vast regional maps with rivers, mountains, roads, and other settlements you’ll eventually interact with through trade, diplomacy, and war. Yes, the final game will feature large-scale military conflicts playing out in the style of a Total War-esque real-time tactical battler.

Jaw-Dropping Visuals

Speaking of scope, the visuals in Manor Lords are jaw-droppingly good for this niche indie project. Ultra-detailed character models, environments, lighting, and an incredible camera system that lets you experience your village from a first-person peasant view or stratospheric wide panoramas. It all runs extremely smoothly too.

Room to Grow

The only downside currently is that Manor Lords is very barebones in its early access state. There’s no progression system, tech trees, deeper gameplay systems, or objectives beyond just trying to survive and build up your settlement. The developers promise frequent updates to flesh out these aspects leading up to the full release.

The Verdict

For now, though, Manor Lords makes for a highly therapeutic and rewarding village life sim. With an unparalleled level of detail and immersion, if you’ve been craving a new take on the genre. That strips away abstractions and makes you feel intimately invested in every peasant’s routine. This should easily be on your wishlist.

Between the astounding visuals and hauntingly atmospheric presentation, Manor Lords has already secured itself. As a landmark title for strategy fans seeking something truly unique and grounded in realism. You will become obsessed with optimizing every aspect of your self-sustaining medieval village. This game will insidiously swallow your free time.
