Will the One Piece Live Action still follow the Main Storyline

One Piece is a scaled-down franchise that has sold millions of dollars through its pirate saga over the last 26 years. As the long-anticipated Netflix live-action adaptation heads to sea, die-hard fans are looking to determine how faithful it is to the manga and anime’s sweeping plots.

The live-action One Piece series will essentially conclude the manga and anime portion of the East Blue Saga in its first season. That means the first 8 episodes are based on around 11 volumes (95 chapters) of the manga or roughly the first 45 episodes of the anime.

While this may seem like a sizeable chunk upfront, it actually only accounts for a mere 4% of the manga’s staggering 1090 total chapters so far. The opening season is just a tiny first step into the vast One Piece universe.

Some Notable Changes Already Revealed

From the official plot synopsis, we can see a few notable deviations from the source material are already in place:

  • Monkey D. Luffy’s grandfather Garp, a vice admiral of the Marines, is actively hunting Luffy from the start alongside his subordinates Koby and Helmeppo. In the original, their reunion happens much later around chapter 431/episode 313.
  • During the Syrup Village arc, Usopp enlists the Marines’ help – a departure from his solitary actions in the manga/anime.

While minor, these changes suggest the live-action may put the Marine/World Government conflict with the Straw Hat Pirates at the forefront much earlier than the source material.

But of course, some adaptation changes are inevitable when bringing such a vast story to live-action. As long as they stay truthful to the core themes, characters, and spirit of One Piece, fans will likely accept reasonable adjustments for pace and height. So just how far will season 1 take us into the overall One Piece saga?

The Journey Across The East Blue

Season 1 introduced Monkey D. Luffy, the silly but brave pirate who aspires to be King of the Pirates by locating the One Piece loot. Before he can get there, Luffy recruits his initial Straw Hat Pirate crew:

    • Roronoa Zoro, the triple-sword-wielding swordsman
    • Nami, the thieving navigator
    • Vinsmoke Sanji, the kickboxing chef
    • Usopp, the skilled marksman and inveterate liar

Together, this misfit crew defeats numerous pirates while evading the Marines, finally acquiring Luffy’s first bounty by the season’s end as they head towards the Grand Line where the One Piece was last hidden.

This tracks closely with the East Blue saga’s major arcs:

    • Romance Dawn
    • Orange Town
    • Syrup Village
    • Baratie
    • Arlong Park

The final moments tease their next major threat, likely setting up season 2’s dive into the Alabasta saga where the Straw Hats gain new members and face the Baroque Works crime syndicate.

How Much Future Content Could Be Adapted?

Of course, fans hoping to see their favorite Wano or Whole Cake Island arc adapted are in for quite a long haul. Even if Netflix’s One Piece lives for multiple seasons, converting nearly 1100 manga chapters into live-action is a truly herculean undertaking that could span a decade or more of continual production.

More realistically, the series may aim to cover one or two of the biggest saga arcs per season at a quality level. This means streamlining, consolidating, or potentially skipping some of the less critical arcs and character introductions along the way.

For example, season 2 will likely adapt the majority of the Alabasta saga to introduce crew members like Chopper and Robin, while setting up bigger conflicts with the World Government and Shichibukai. However, the earlier Little Garden arc with its prehistoric dinosaur island may get the ax for budget and time reasons.

While not ideal for purists, this would allow the live-action to progress through One Piece’s most iconic story beats at a reasonable pace without overstaying its welcome season-to-season.

Ultimately, fans should keep their expectations grounded. Even with author Eiichiro Oda’s blessing and collaboration, realistically translating every facet of his multi-decade magnum opus into live-action is nigh impossible. Some changes, omissions, and deviations are inevitable.

However, if the spirit, characters, and core narrative of One Piece make the transition intact, this Netflix adaptation could be a spectacular new way to experience the grand pirate adventure for long-time fans and brand-new viewers alike. So get ready to encounter the Straw Hat Pirates in a bold new light when the live-action voyage begins!
