Is Cyberpunk 2077 Good After the Updates? | GAME REVIEW

User Rating: 8.2

When Cyberpunk 2077 was first released, fans were hopeful that this was going to be one of the greatest games of all time. However, everyone’s hopes were instantly crushed when the game came out. There were so many problems from bugs to janky mechanics to the point where Cyberpunk 2077 had the worst reviews in all of Steam. For a while, it stayed that way and it seemed like fans had just wasted their money. That was until now.

What were the new Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 Updates?

After a rocky launch in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 has seen ongoing improvements, but the new Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty paid expansion truly realize the game’s potential. Together, they overhauled progression, expanded content, and delivered the definitive Night City experience.

Update 2.0 Revamps Progression and Gear Systems

Available as a free 14GB patch, Update 2.0 completely reworks Cyberpunk 2077’s skill trees and gear systems. Players can redistribute attribute points and perks with new abilities to unlock. This facilitates respecting builds anytime without penalties.

For example, the clothing system no longer contributes to armor stats, avoiding the need to dress oddly for defense bonuses. Instead, stats come from Cyberware implants upgradable at Ripperdocs.

Transmogrification Ensures You Keep Signature Looks

The changes reduce grinding, respect player agency in builds, and increase fashion flexibility. Driving around Night City to test skills against the improved enemy AI and overhauled vehicular combat simply feels better.

Phantom Liberty Expansion Adds Spy-Thriller Story

The paid Phantom Liberty expansion delivers an expansive 10+ hour spy-thriller campaign set in the New United States of America. It stars Idris Elba as covert agent Solomon Reed who recruits V to infiltrate agent training centers.

This globe-trotting cyberpunk plot features intrigue and twists as tensions escalate. It intermixes exhilarating narrative quests with new hustles and combat zones to explore in fresh districts. Phantom Liberty also introduces elite enemies scaling to V’s level and previously unavailable Sandevistan Cyberware, slowing time during combat.

From set pieces to social stealth sections, Phantom Liberty captures Night City’s signature aesthetic. Reed brings charismatic energy alongside the expansion’s evolving side characters.

High Value, High Cost

There’s no question that Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty add tremendous content and modernization to elevate Cyberpunk 2077 as an RPG. The revamped mechanics, expanded gear, additional activities, and production value justify returning to Night City.

However, at $29.99, the Phantom Liberty pricing may deter some players. Considering Cyberpunk 2077 still has sporadic bugs, the expansion is costly for 10 hours of mission content. Players can watch for sales or acquire it with bundles.

Ultimately, Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty present Cyberpunk 2077 at its best for both new players and returning champions of Night City. If technical problems marred your first visit, now is the perfect time to reinstall and explore the arcology with new cyberware and opportunities. However, it seems that CD Projekt RED is going to give it more updates.
