Don’t download Minecraft’s latest Xbox PC app

Players of the PC version of Minecraft through the Xbox App or Game Pass are being cautioned against installing the latest update. The warning, issued by the game’s developer Mojang on Twitter, highlights a significant risk: proceeding with the update may result in the complete loss of players’ worlds. This could mean the potential deletion of hundreds of gameplay hours.

The issue specifically affects the Bedrock Edition of Minecraft. This version allows for cross-platform play with other devices and is typically updated regularly through the Xbox App to include the newest features and patches. However, players are advised to hold off on downloading the most recent patch until further measures are taken to protect their game data.

Minecraft: Updating Risks and Precautions

Players are cautioned against updating Minecraft via the Xbox app on PC as this may cause the loss of game worlds and progress. The developers, Mojang, have communicated through Twitter the risks involved with an update which has the potential to erase the considerable time and effort players have invested into their game worlds.

To avoid any loss and still benefit from the latest Minecraft version, it’s essential to run the “Gaming Services Repair Tool” prior to the update to ensure Gaming Services are up to date, specifically to version 19.87.13001.0. The steps to do this are fairly straightforward:

  • Open the Xbox App on your PC.
  • Click on your profile picture.
  • Select the “Support” option.
  • Here you can initiate the Gaming Services repair function.

Once the Gaming Services are updated, you can proceed with updating Minecraft securely. As a precaution, creating a backup of your worlds is recommended, preparing you for any unexpected errors that might occur during the update process.

It’s important to note that this update related issue affects only the Bedrock version of Minecraft. Once the game is successfully updated, players can resume their Moon exploration endeavors, a feature in the game crafted in collaboration with the Japanese space exploration agency, JAXA.
