Rethinking Heroes: The Overhaul Needed in Overwatch 2

Overwatch has always been a game of strategy and skill, with each hero having unique abilities and play styles. However, as the game evolves and new heroes are introduced, some original characters inevitably feel dated or less effective.

Now that the Overwatch 2 scene has reached its seventh season, it’s the perfect time to discuss which heroes could benefit from a rework to keep up with the game’s dynamic landscape. Five heroes that come to mind are Sombra, Cassidy, Widowmaker, Roadhog, and Reaper.

Sombra

Sombra, the stealthy hacker, has always been a difficult character to balance. Her ability to disable enemies and become invisible makes her a unique and potentially powerful hero. However, her damage output is relatively low, and her hacking abilities often prove disappointing in battle. As a result, a redesign could focus on improving her hacking ability, making her more impactful in team fights. On the other hand, increasing its damage could make it a more viable option for players who prefer an aggressive play style.

Cassidy

Formerly known as McCree, Cassidy is a cowboy hero with a powerful revolver and a stunning ability. While he can be effective in the right hands, his lack of mobility makes him an easy target for many of the game’s faster, more agile heroes. In addition, an overhaul could introduce new mobility options for Cassidy, giving him more ways to escape danger or engage enemies. As a result, this could make him a more versatile hero, able to adapt to various situations.

Widowmaker

Widowmaker, the lethal sniper, is another hero that could benefit from a revamp. While her ability to take out enemies from a distance is undeniably powerful, it often feels like a high-risk, high-reward playstyle that relies heavily on the player’s marksmanship. As a result, an overhaul could introduce new abilities or mechanics that would give Widowmaker more options in melee combat, reducing her reliance on long-range sniping and making her a more flexible option in various scenarios.

Roadhog

Roadhog, the hook-and-shotgun tanky, is a favorite of many players. However, his large hit zone and lack of defensive abilities make him an easy target for enemies. On the other hand, a redesign could introduce new defensive options for Roadhog, allowing him to resist enemy attacks better and fulfill his role as a tank. As a result, this could involve changes to his healing ability or introducing new abilities that reduce damage or control mobs.

Reaper

Finally, we have Reaper, the melee specialist with dual shotguns. While Reaper can be devastating at close range, his lack of range and mobility often make him a one-trick pony. An overhaul could introduce new abilities or mechanics that would give Reaper more options in combat, allowing him to engage enemies at different distances or escape danger more effectively. In addition, this could include changes to his teleportation ability or the introduction of new abilities that improve his survivability or damage.

Undoubtedly, it’s exciting to think about the possible changes and improvements that could be introduced to our favorite heroes in Overwatch 2. By reworking heroes like Sombra, Cassidy, Widowmaker, Roadhog, and Reaper, Blizzard could breathe new life into these characters, making them more versatile, effective, and fun to play. Finally, let’s hope the developers take this opportunity to change things up and keep the game fresh and exciting for years to come.
