If you have been wanting to know if 343 Industries is developing another Halo title following Infinite then the answer is clearly of course.
Evidence indicates that work on Halo‘s next unannounced project started as early as April 2022.
That ties into 343’s approach of “now and in the future” continuing to work with the famous franchise.
Whether the rumors are true or not, the developers have something up their sleeves.
Developer LinkedIn Profiles Tell the Story
The details come from the LinkedIn profiles of former and current 343 developers.
Justin Dinges, a former art director, updated his profile stating he “worked on Halo’s next unannounced release” from April 2022 until leaving in March 2023.
Additionally, Ian Slutz, a senior character systems designer still at 343, has Unreal Engine 5 experience listed – the engine released in April 2022, years after Halo Infinite shipped.
Even though Ian didn’t specifically state working on Halo’s unannounced release, the timeline fits.
Is It a Sequel or a Spinoff?
Exactly what this unannounced Halo project is remains a mystery for now.
It could be a proper numbered sequel or maybe a spinoff title.
There are also questions about whether it connects to the separate Halo project support studio Certain Affinity has been working on behind the scenes.
Halo Infinite’s Evolution Continues
On the other hand, while the next Halo lies ahead, 343 hasn’t given up on Infinite yet. The multiplayer has received major expansions like the classic Firefight mode.
However, the studio is changing how new content arrives by retiring the seasonal model in favor of smaller, more frequent “Operations” that put extra creation tools in players’ hands.
A Fresh Start is Needed
As exciting as continuing Halo Infinite is, 343’s community director Brian Jarrard teased that “additional teams” are “accelerating towards the future” on “brand new projects.”
This lines up with job listings for roles to “build the next generation of games and experiences” in Halo’s sci-fi universe.
A fresh start could be exactly what 343 needs after Infinite’s rocky, incomplete launch back in 2021.
The Next Halo’s Time to Get It Right
Nevertheless, if there’s one key lesson 343 must take to heart, it’s that the next major Halo release absolutely must ship as a thorough, feature-complete game at launch.
Infinite’s biggest issues stemmed from launching without core modes like Forge and cooperative campaigns.
The baggage of those missing pieces has stuck with Infinite despite immense improvements made since 2021.
For Halo to truly soar again, 343’s next game cannot repeat those same mistakes.
