AMD Ryzen 8040 laptop CPUs spotted in Geekbench

Three laptop CPUs from AMD’s Ryzen 8000 series expected next year have already been tested in Geekbench.

They are the Ryzen 5 8640HS, Ryzen 7 8840HS and the Ryzen 9 8940H, in this case part of Asus’ next-generation TUF Gaming A15 laptops.

The 8640HS has six cores by the looks of it (12 threads), a clock speed of 4.3 GHz (5.0 GHz boost) and Radeon 760M graphics. The 8840HS and 8940H are both octacores (16 threads), with an integrated Radeon 780M graphics and clock speeds of 3.8 GHz (~5.1 GHz boost) and 4.0 GHz (5.2 GHz) respectively.

And as HotHardware scoffed, those are exactly the same specs as those of the “predecessors” in AMD’s current Ryzen 7040 series for laptops. So these appear to be rebrands, again based on Zen 4.

Possibly the chips have been ‘tweaked’ for better ai performance though; 60% better according to sources from YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead. When the Ryzen 8040s will hit the market is still unknown. Intel’s next-generation laptop processors (Meteor Lake) appear to be out before February.
