Valve makes test version of SteamVR 2.0 available

Valve has made an opt-in beta version of SteamVR 2.0 available to all users. The VR interface software should completely change the UI and add many new features. No concrete release date for the software has been announced yet.

SteamVR 2.0 betaSteamVR 2.0 introduces almost all the current features of Steam and the Steam Deck into the SteamVR ecosystem, according to Valve. Although the company does not provide details about these features, it has been bringing feature and quality-of-life improvements to Steam and the Steam Deck on a regular basis lately, partly in relation to Big Picture Mode. Until now, on the other hand, SteamVR users had to miss many standard features in the native interface. By the way, practically all Steam features are already available through desktop mode, which can also be used through a VR headset.

Furthermore, Valve says SteamVR 2.0 brings an update to the virtual keyboard, including support for new languages, emojis and themes. Also, chat and voice chat features are now native to SteamVR. Steam’s store section is additionally getting an update that will allow games specifically for that platform to be displayed in VR.

Since 2018, Valve released an improved main version of SteamVR every few months, consisting of several small beta updates tested before that. Really big feature updates, however, have been absent recently. Various media outlets are therefore speculating that Valve is again working on a standalone VR headset. This product, which has been speculated about for several years, would be called Deckard internally.
