Sea of Thieves Is Finally Coming to PS5

Sea of Thieves Key Art 2

Today’s a good day for PlayStation 5 players wanting to join fellow pirates on the seas: Sea of Thieves is coming to PS5 on April 30.

This announcement finally puts to rest the months-long speculation and rumors on whether the game will finally become a cross-platform title. To coincide with the game’s Season 12, PS5 players (but not PS4, sorry) can finally set sail on the Sea of Thieves to start their pirate adventure. There are no details yet on what kind of bundles and editions will be available from the PlayStation Store, but those who are interested can wishlist the game tomorrow, February 22. We’ll update you with more details once Rare reveals what bundles and game editions they have planned.

Here’s the big reveal trailer from Rare that addresses long-time requests for the game to come to PS5:

Rare also released another video, where the Sea of Thieves crew speak about their thoughts and feelings regarding the game’s imminent arrival on the PS5. This announcement is a significant milestone for Rare because Sea of Thieves marks the first game the company has released a game on any PlayStation platform. Here’s what Sea of Thieves Executive Producer Joe Neate has to say about it:

As a studio we’re hugely excited about this opportunity, and ready to tackle the challenge of delivering content to a brand new audience. Millions of players have flocked to the Sea of Thieves over the last six years on Xbox and Steam, and it’s incredible to once again be in the position of welcoming an entire new community onto our shores.

What makes it even more of a landmark moment is that while Rare has made games for many consoles, computers and handhelds in its 40-year history, this will be the first time a Rare game has ever launched on a PlayStation platform. Join senior Sea of Thieves team members in the video below as they discuss their hopes for how this move will strengthen the game for all players!

We can genuinely say that there’s never been a better time to set sail with us. The team has dedicated years to making Sea of Thieves the best it can be with regular free content updates, offering everything from new Voyages, new tools and new islands to sprawling story-focused Tall Tales, including crossovers with other legendary pirate properties. We’ve even introduced whole new ways to play, like Safer Seas mode for pirates still finding their sea legs, and we have plans to keep adding features and improving the experience for a long time yet.

You can watch the rest of the crew talk about their experiences below:

Sea of Thieves is one of the four titles from the Microsoft/Xbox library that will make the jump to other platforms soon. Pentiment and Grounded are both headed to the PS4 and PS5, while Hi-Fi Rush is PS5 only. And if you’re a current or returning SOT player, make sure you have enough storage space if you haven’t yet downloaded this week’s update.

I started writing about video games in 2016, and haven't looked back since. It's been an amazing journey discovering new games and meeting the people behind them. Fueled by litres of tea and nightly legendary skirmishes on Halo Wars with my husband.

Have your say!
