Zenless Zone Zero Version 2.8 launches on May 6, bringing the highly anticipated Ice Anomaly agent Promeia into the fold. While many players have been saving their Polychromes for this exact moment, HoYoverse just threw a massive wrench into everyone’s plans. The developers released a flood of official drip marketing and teasers for Season 3, revealing a stacked roster of upcoming characters that instantly shifted community focus away from the current patch.

If you are a free to play user or a light spender, you are now facing a massive dilemma. You have to decide if Promeia is worth your hard earned premium currency, or if you should hoard everything for the upcoming wind meta and the legendary Void Hunters arriving in Version 3.0.

Right now, we are going to look at the exact trap Version 2.8 sets up, how the new Season 3 characters will shift the endgame meta, and why the community is currently arguing over a major character redesign. We will figure out exactly where you should spend your tapes to keep your account competitive.
The Promeia trap and the 2.8 content drop
Version 2.8 is not a filler patch by any means. It wraps up the current storyline and gives players plenty to do. Promeia takes the spotlight as the new S-Rank Ice Anomaly agent, running alongside a rerun for the Ether Support agent Lucia. If you need a strong Ice carry for your account, Promeia looks incredible.
The patch also brings the Operation Save Bootopia event. You get to run around a theme park designed specifically for Bangboos while controlling Eous to grab lots of free upgrade materials and premium currency. You also get a seven day login event that hands out 10 Encrypted Master Tapes.
Endgame players will have their hands full with Deadly Assault. The mode continues its brutal two week rotation, and we expect the new wind boss to show up immediately. This boss requires you to understand the new wind mechanics. When you apply the Wind Anomaly, the enemy gets the Wind Swept status. This leads to Contamination, making them take massive extra wind damage. Hitting them with a different element triggers a Vortex, which acts as the wind version of an anomaly disorder.
Why Season 3 is destroying savings accounts
While 2.8 is packed, the “Before the Wind Rises” teaser trailer for Season 3 completely stole the show. HoYoverse confirmed we are heading to the Roscaelifer region, and the character lineup is heavily stacked.
First up is Velina Airgid, confirmed as the first ever Wind Anomaly agent. If you want to abuse the new Contamination and Vortex mechanics mentioned above, Velina is going to be a must pull. Following her is Norma Hollowell, a Fire Stun agent. We all remember how well the fire stunner combo worked back in the early days of the game, so Norma is already high on the priority list for competitive players.
The biggest mechanical shift comes with Pyrois. This is an entirely new combat form for Phaethon. After watching agents fight for months, Proxies will finally have a physical presence in Hollow combat. Current speculation points to Pyrois being a free story related unlock in Version 3.0, so you likely will not need to roll for this specific form.
The great Sunbringer redesign debate
The hype around Season 3 is huge, but it also sparked a massive community debate regarding Sunbringer. As a legendary Void Hunter, former CEO of the Marcel Corporation, and ruler of Roscaelifer, she is a massive deal in the lore.
Players have known about Sunbringer since the early Eridu Era lore trailer. However, her new in game model shown in the Season 3 teasers looks very different. HoYoverse altered her horns, removed her iconic coat in favor of a dress, and gave her a very noticeable increase in chest size.
Many players feel the original design was more unique and fitting for a hardened Void Hunter. Others think the new model looks great and fits the updated anime aesthetic of the current roster. Since she is not releasing immediately in 3.0, HoYoverse still has time to tweak her design based on feedback, exactly like they did with Miyabi early on.
What you should do right now
If your account is struggling to clear Ice weak content in Deadly Assault, pulling for Promeia is a safe bet. She will carry you through the immediate endgame challenges.
However, if your roster is already comfortable, you should absolutely hold your tapes. Velina is going to define the new wind meta in Season 3. With the introduction of the Roscaelifer region and Void Hunters like Sunbringer and Claret on the horizon, saving your resources for Version 3.0 gives you the best chance to adapt to the massive power shifts coming to the game. Log in, grab your free 10 pulls from the Version 2.8 event, clear the new story, and start saving every piece of premium currency you can find.
