Where Winds Meet brings together martial arts fantasy and online co-op mechanics in a dense open-world RPG. Developed by Everstone Studio and published by NetEase, the title launches globally in 2025 on Steam, PS5, and mobile with controller support. Although the game has already entered open beta in China, international players recently had access to a limited closed beta.

The story takes place during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. Players start their journey by customizing a martial artist, then gradually explore the land while unlocking new weapons and abilities. The beta included swords, spears, bows, fans with healing effects, rope darts, dual blades, umbrellas, and broadswords. While only two melee weapons can be equipped at a time, the bow remains accessible to all.

Progression happens through a talent system that offers health boosts, skill slots, and increased crit potential. These talents support mystic arts—unique combat abilities such as aerial strikes, weapon disarms, teleportation, and object manipulation. Players receive eight ability slots but must unlock each through the talent tree.

Importantly, mystic arts are scattered across the world. Interacting with NPCs, observing animals, or exploring hidden areas can lead to unexpected skill discoveries. For instance, observing a bear may teach an enemy-throwing move. Once learned, these powers can be combined for dynamic builds.

A separate system, known as the melody exchange, lets players trade bugs, flowers, or oddities with an NPC. These exchanges unlock stat boosts, new weapons, or further skills. This setup encourages exploration and rewards curiosity.

Multiplayer, Mounts, and MMO-Style Systems

Multiplayer was partially available during testing. Players could team up in parties of four or explore semi-shared online worlds. Reports suggest a soft cap of around 30 players per instance, though this has not been confirmed officially. The game includes four-player dungeons, 10-player raids, 1v1 PvP, and larger guild-based PvP modes.

Dungeon participation consumes an energy meter. According to test data, full recharge takes about 40 hours. Although the full monetization model remains unclear, players may be able to refill energy using real currency. Cosmetics appear to form the bulk of purchasable content, including outfits, hairstyles, and themed mounts.

Mounts can be earned through quests, purchased, or taken directly from the environment. Some are large enough to support multiple riders. Beyond mount travel, movement includes teleportation, wind-walking, and underwater navigation. Unlockable travel points also allow fast movement across previously visited zones.

Side Content, Progression Systems, and Exploration

Life skills include fishing, cooking, wound mending, and crafting. Environmental hazards such as poison, injuries, and sprains introduce risk beyond combat. Healing requires visiting a local medic or another player with healing capabilities.

The world features more than just combat and quests. Players can encounter world bosses, puzzles, butterfly trails that lead to treasure, and a surprisingly fun insult-based card game. Classic minigames like Mahjong are also available. NPCs feature a reactive dialogue system. Some remember player choices, while others offer items or side quests based on past interactions. Relationship-building is possible with several key characters.

Eight factions, referred to as sects, offer players access to exclusive martial arts and weapons. Players must follow questlines to join a sect and adhere to its rules. Breaking these rules may result in expulsion. However, remaining unaffiliated is also a valid playstyle.

Additional systems include player housing, customizable appearance options, and emotional story chapters. Beta players could complete a segment of the main narrative, which introduced fully developed characters, cinematic storytelling, and emotional stakes that set it apart from similar titles. Character-driven moments provided unexpected depth and long-lasting impact.
