Where Winds Meet Global Beta Review: Mystic Skills, Cities, and Combat

On July 25, the global beta test for Where Winds Meet began. Published by NetEase and already available in China, this free-to-play martial arts title unfolds around the year 1000 CE, during the chaotic Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period between the fall of the Tang Dynasty and the rise of the Song. Players assume the role of a wandering warrior navigating conflict, betrayal, and mystic discovery in a richly realized historical setting.

Inspired by titles like Ghost of Tsushima and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the game introduces the world’s first open world focused entirely on the Chinese Wuxia genre—a term referencing stylized martial arts fiction. According to lead designer Chris Leu, this genre is central to the game’s identity, shaping its narrative and mechanics from the ground up.

Wuxia Combat and Mystic Arts Mechanics

The opening sequence immediately signals the game’s cinematic inspiration, featuring sweeping bamboo forests, horseback escapes, and blade-dodging heroics in slow motion. This transitions smoothly into gameplay, where Wuxia’s influence takes form not only in visual design but also in mechanics.

Early quests teach mystical arts through observation and timing. For example, fighting a honey-loving bear unlocks Tai Chi techniques—an introduction to a system where combat skills are drawn from nature. Additional techniques include the Lion’s Roar and the Venomous Toad Style, emphasizing the game’s connection to traditional martial storytelling.

Combat supports both fast-paced and thoughtful engagements. Players can parry attacks using a timed prompt that consumes insight points, preventing overuse. The parry system enters slow motion during execution and can be customized or turned off entirely. This design supports both accessibility and player mastery.

Weapons, Martial Schools, and Customization Options

Players can equip both main and sub weapons from a growing arsenal of seven types. In addition to swords and spears, the game features more creative options like umbrellas that stun enemies and folding fans that heal allies in a designated area. Martial schools—eleven in total—further define a character’s technique pool, letting players blend mystical and martial abilities for different styles.

This flexibility encourages experimentation. Equipping a bow, for instance, works differently depending on its slot, allowing long-range attacks or puzzle-solving. These systems resemble mechanics from recent action RPGs but are filtered through the Wuxia lens, offering familiarity with a twist.

Cities, NPC Systems, and Historical Detail

During the beta, one standout location was the ancient city of Jiangning, believed to be the inspiration for a major in-game capital. Despite the war-torn world, the city buzzes with life—vendors trade, citizens gossip, and majestic palaces dominate the skyline. The comparison to Cyberpunk 2077 comes naturally given the thousands of interactive NPCs with unique reputation levels.

This attention to urban life makes exploration feel purposeful. Wandering the capital reveals massive arching bridges, historical detail, and evolving storylines tied to the protagonist’s origins. Reputation tracking adds a social progression layer that complements the mystical and martial skill systems.

A New Benchmark for Wuxia in Gaming

After just a few hours, it’s clear that Where Winds Meet combines a long list of modern open-world elements—parries, stamina systems, exploration incentives—with distinct Wuxia flavor. While its systems may echo other action titles, the consistency in tone and cultural inspiration ties everything together.

What defines Where Winds Meet is not just its range of features, but the way those features harmonize with a dedicated respect for Wuxia. It doesn’t just borrow from the genre; it fully commits to it. Whether exploring ancient cities, learning mystic skills from wild animals, or mastering umbrellas in battle, the game crafts a layered world worth diving into.
