Say goodbye to late game comebacks! Swiftplay will now implement the Sudden Death League of Legends (LoL) mechanic. This has been a feature of Clash mode before, too, preventing absurdly long games that seem to just not end. The S1.25.3 update introduced this mechanic, promising to make Swiftplay stay fast-paced. Let’s look at the complete details about it.
How Does Sudden Death Work?
The Sudden Death League of Legends mechanic is the game’s way to ensure that games in certain modes won’t exceed a hard cap. It gives the game a “fixed maximum length” depending on the mode, forcing a winner to end the match.
Sudden Death does such a forced conclusion by lowering structure defenses at one point in the game, then later on making them self-inflict damage.
Sudden Death in Clash
In League of Legends’ official patch notes, they stated that the added Sudden Death mechanic is similar to that in Clash. In this game mode, the Sudden Death timer begins at 60 minutes, or an hour into the game. After all, most League players would literally dread a game that stretches that long. However, if both teams are unwilling to surrender or lose, it might go on even longer.
League of Legends presented the Sudden Death in Clash in 2018 as the solution. Thus, games are forced to end by exploding towers and Nexus, taking damage over time even without any player or minion attacks. At first, it will just be a reduction in tower defenses, so they’ll be easier for players to push.
Then, when the 65-minute mark hits, that’s when the structures start their slow deterioration. It will start at any remaining towers farthest from the base, then the inhibitor turrets, nexus turrets and finally, the Nexus itself. The Nexus explosion is set to happen at a max of 70 minutes. There is no way to stop this decline, only a counteraction to start pushing the enemies’ structures so their Nexus dies first.
Sudden Death in Swiftplay
In the Swiftplay gamemode, the newly added Sudden Death League of Legends mechanic had some adjustments. The structures will instead lose 35% of their resistance per minute, 25 minutes in. Then, the game will give a Sudden Death warning at the 27-minute mark, 3 minutes before the deterioration starts.
At 30 minutes, the towers will start crumbling, losing 3.3% of max HP per 2 seconds. A “The Sudden Death has started!” announcement will mark this change. Ideally, this mechanic would spur players to action and fight to end the game quickly. If they don’t, the Nexus burns at 36:00.
Player Reactions
While community reactions are mixed, mostly are positive towards the mechanic’s aim to hard cap the game time. They agree that Swiftplay has to live up to its name and end within 30 minutes.
However, most believe that this is a “boring” way to do so. They say that instead of taking action, players of the winning side may just gain a greater advantage with more turrets, therefore slower Nexus burn.
Many also want to bring back the Nexus Blitz mechanic instead. This makes the game more fun according to them, as the idea of both Nexus coming alive and fighting each other in the midlane is both funny and interactive.
Conclusion
A sure way to end the game and force a winner, making players take action to avoid Nexus death. This update will protect you from hour-long games and aching fingers, and prevent your KDA from suffering even more. What do you think of the Sudden Death League of Legends mechanic in Swiftplay?
