Call of Duty: Warzone Removing Popular Game Mode After Less Than a Year

Call of Duty: Warzone is retiring Black Ops Royale after only seven months, with Season 6 serving as the final opportunity to play the alternative Battle Royale mode. The playlist debuted on March 12, 2026, and will disappear at the end of the upcoming seasonal cycle as Warzone moves toward its Modern Warfare 4 integration.

Season 6 begins on September 17, giving Black Ops Royale fans one last stretch to play on Avalon and earn two final Winstreak rewards before the mode is removed.

Black Ops Royale Is Leaving Warzone

Activision has confirmed that Season 6 will be the final season for Black Ops Royale.

The mode arrived during Black Ops 7 Season 2 on March 12 as a modern interpretation of Black Ops 4’s Blackout. Its removal means it will have remained available for roughly seven months.

No specific reason has been given for ending the playlist.

Its departure does, however, come as Warzone prepares for another major transition. Modern Warfare 4 content and progression are expected to integrate with Warzone beginning with that game’s first season.

Why Black Ops Royale Plays Differently

Black Ops Royale strips away several systems that have become fundamental to the standard Warzone experience.

There are no traditional custom loadouts, Gulag, Buy Stations, or in-match cash. Instead, players need to search the map for their equipment and improve weapons through different rarity tiers.

Movement also incorporates mechanics such as Wingsuits, Grappling Hooks, and wall-jumping Omnimovement across Avalon.

The result is a Battle Royale mode built more heavily around looting, improvisation, and making the best of whatever equipment is available during a match.

For players who enjoyed the more traditional battle royale structure of Blackout, that distinction became one of Black Ops Royale’s biggest attractions.

It also lowered the importance of weapon progression outside matches. Players didn’t need to arrive with fully leveled Black Ops 7 weapons and optimized custom loadouts to compete in the same way they might in standard Battle Royale.

Black Ops Royale Has Divided Warzone Players

Despite developing a dedicated following, Black Ops Royale hasn’t been universally popular.

Some players have argued that keeping both standard Battle Royale and Black Ops Royale available simultaneously divided the population between too many large-scale playlists.

Bots have been another point of contention. Some community members complained that matches became less rewarding when finding lobbies populated primarily by human opponents became more difficult.

Balancing has attracted criticism as well.

On the other side, supporters have praised precisely what makes Black Ops Royale different: an increased focus on ground loot, less reliance on pre-built loadouts, and the need to adapt during every match.

Those differences have made the response to its removal similarly divided. For some players, Black Ops Royale offered the alternative Warzone experience they had been waiting for. Others would rather see the player base consolidated into fewer core modes.

Two Final Winstreak Rewards Are Coming

Players who want one last challenge before Black Ops Royale disappears can pursue two new Winstreak rewards during its final season.

Achieving 10 consecutive victories unlocks the Crimson Omen Weapon Camo, while reaching 25 consecutive wins rewards the Contagion Camo.

Winstreak challenges will also extend to other Warzone playlists, including standard Battle Royale and Resurgence.

For dedicated Black Ops Royale players, however, Season 6 represents the last opportunity to chase its rewards while the playlist remains active.

The Haunting Returns With Warzone Season 6

Black Ops Royale’s final season arrives alongside the return of The Haunting on September 17.

Haven’s Hollow will receive a supernatural makeover and become Haunted Hollow, complete with horror-themed changes and a Ghost Train.

Season 6 will also introduce Giant Infected, a large-scale version of Infected supporting 64 players.

Combined with the new Winstreak challenges, the update gives players several reasons to return to Warzone even as one of its more experimental Battle Royale variants prepares to leave.

Black Ops Royale’s lifespan may have been brief, but its emphasis on scavenged equipment and adapting to each match showed how differently Warzone can play when custom loadouts, Buy Stations, and the Gulag are taken out of the equation. Players who prefer that approach have until the end of Season 6 to enjoy it before the mode is retired.
