On June 23, 2025, a huge change happened in Warhammer 40K: Darktide as Fatshark decided to launch the Battle for Tertium update. These massive changes fundamentally changes the whole game experience, with a structured narrative-focused campaign, improved progression systems, and changes in weapon balancing. This update will come alongside the new paid DLC, Adeptus Arbites.

New Campaign Structure and Narrative Focus

The Battle for Tertium update completely changes the player experience and makes it revolve around a linear campaign narrative. Players will now progress through a carefully designed sequence of enemies, maps, and character interactions. Everything is crafted to narrate the story of the Battle for Tertium conflict.

The new progression system also includes new cinematics and missions that will provide you context and narrative with each encounter. This campaign’s main objective is to help new players get used to the game mechanics, while also unlocking features that were previously locked behind character levels. For the existing players with characters already at level 10 or above, you can choose to skip the narrative campaign or experience it from the start.

Overhauled Mission Board and Difficulty System

If there is one thing that received the most changes in Warhammer 40K Battle for Tertium, it is the overhaul of the mission board system. This new system separates missions from certain difficulty levels, which allows players to select any mission available with their preferred difficulty level. This change increases the number of missions in all difficulty tiers.

This update’s objective is to restructure the game into focusing on the characters’ skills rather than the level requirements. Even with low levels, players can now prove their competence by completing available missions regardless of the difficulty. This provides merit to elite players and allows veteran players to have confidence that their teammates gained their positions with hard work.

Comprehensive Weapon Balancing Changes

Apart from the mission board system, Battle for Tertium also included weapon balancing effects in the majority of the weapon families, which addresses the issues regarding weapon effectiveness.

Devil’s Claw improved its crowd control and reliability. It has increased offensive properties of Light attack profiles along with its armor damage modifiers for Heavy Strikedown and Special Riposte profiles.

Atrox Tactical Axes improved its mobility with enhanced sprint profiles even when attacking. The special attack damage also received huge changes and a Heavy Strikedown profile for vertical and uppercut attacks.

Shock Mauls increased its damage output across most profiles. However, Heavy Strikedown and Special attacks received particularly large bonus damage output. There are also enhanced base stamina and dodge templates.

For Lucius Helbore Lasguns, it now has faster wielding time, enhanced armor modifiers, and better precision. Combat shotguns also have increased base damage, faster reloading time, and increased ammo reserves.

Quality of Life Improvements

Battle for Tertium update also focused on improving the overall player game experience. The maximum number of operatives updated to 8 and weapon loadout slots increased to 8 as well. Players are now able to enjoy at least 900 conversations between the original cast and the new paid Adeptus Arbites DLC class.

There are also technical issues resolved in the update and bug fixes for weapons and blessings, UI localization, mission geometry corrections, and cosmetic clipping issues.

Conclusion

The Warhammer 40K Battle for Tertium update showcases a huge change moment for the Darktide. It has changed a lot of systems that have shaped old players since launch. With the addition of narrative-focused campaign, mission board system, and weapon balancing, the players are now bound for new experiences to enjoy. Moreover, the launch of the Adeptus Arbites DLC adds another layer of entertainment and content offering.
