Riot dropped Valorant patch 12.08 on April 29, bringing Skirmish: Ascension, a new limited time ranked mode built around 1v1 and 2v2 gunfights with one ability per agent. The patch also rotates Ascent back into Competitive and Deathmatch queues while pulling Bind completely, and Premier returns on PC with Stage V26A3 starting May 6.
Valorant Patch 12.08: Key Update Summary
| Category | Feature | Details |
| New Mode | Skirmish: Ascension | Experimental 1v1/2v2 ranked mode on FTW ladder. |
| Map Pool | Ascent IN / Bind OUT | Applied to Competitive and Deathmatch queues. |
| Premier | Stage V26A3 | Matches kick off May 6; Playoffs run June 20–21. |
| Progression | Staged Weapons | No economy; weapons escalate based on round number. |
| Social | Discord Integration | Global launch of Discord account linking and invites. |
If you grind ranked or love pure aim duels, Skirmish Ascension gives you a separate FTW ranked ladder with no economy and staged weapons. Players who miss Ascent in comp get it back immediately, but Bind mains will have to wait until the next rotation. Premier teams on PC also get a longer six week match schedule with multi-day playoffs, so org leaders need to lock rosters now.
This article breaks down every confirmed change in patch 12.08, what the new Skirmish mode does for your rank climb, how the map swap affects your agent pool, and when Premier matches actually start.
Skirmish Ascension Explained
Skirmish: Ascension is Riot’s new limited ranked experience running through Act 3. You queue 1v1 or 2v2, pick from 14 agents who each get exactly one ability, and fight through staged weapon rounds with zero economy management.
Riot designed the mode to prioritize gunplay while keeping abilities tactical instead of dominant. Every agent in the pool has one specific ability unlocked:
-
Jett (Tailwind)
-
Waylay (ability not specified in patch notes)
-
Chamber (Trademark)
-
Cypher (Trapwire)
-
Omen (Shrouded Step)
-
Phoenix (Blaze)
-
Yoru (Gatecrash)
-
Iso (Double Tap)
-
Sage (Barrier Orb)
-
Raze (Blast Pack)
-
Vyse (ability not specified in patch notes)
-
KAY/O (FRAG/ment)
-
Breach (Flashpoint)
-
Veto (ability not specified in patch notes)
Weapons progress automatically based on round number. Rounds 1 through 4 force pistols only, rounds 5 through 8 give you low tier rifles, and round 9 onward unlocks Vandal and Phantom. You cannot buy different guns, so every fight tests your mechanics and positioning at each weapon tier.
The mode runs on a separate FTW ranked ladder. Your Skirmish rank does not affect your normal Competitive rating, so you can treat this as pure aim training or a side grind without risking your main account MMR.
Map Rotation Changes Hit Comp and Deathmatch
Ascent is back in Competitive and Deathmatch queues starting with patch 12.08. Bind is completely removed from both modes and will not appear in your ranked games until Riot rotates it back in.
This matters if you one trick agents who rely on Bind’s teleporters or tight chokepoints. Omen, Yoru, and Chamber players lose some of their best setups, while Ascent favors long range duelists and controllers who can hold wide angles on A site and mid.
Deathmatch players also get Ascent back for warmup, so expect more practice time on heaven peeks and catwalk angles before your ranked sessions.
Premier Returns on PC
Premier comes back to PC with patch 12.08. Stage V26A3 match schedules start May 6, and Contender plus Invite divisions get a six week run from May 9 through June 13.
Riot changed the playoff format this stage. First round playoffs happen June 20, and advancing teams return June 21 for the next bracket. If your squad made Contender or Invite, block out both days instead of expecting a single session.
Teams below those divisions still follow the standard schedule. Check your division in-game to confirm match windows and playoff eligibility.
