The latest VALORANT developer update just dropped, and it finally addresses the exact things ruining your ranked climb. Riot has confirmed major shifts to the competitive system, aggressive balance updates to the game’s most frustrating agent, and new ways to review your matches.

If you have been losing more Ranked Rating than you gain or getting run down by a sliding Neon with a Judge, this update is exactly what you have been waiting for. Riot is actively targeting the matchmaking issues that make lobbies feel unfair, while rolling out Patch 12.09 to squash the current run and gun shotgun meta.
Here is exactly how these changes will impact your climb, what you need to know about the new game modes, and when you can start sharing your match replays with friends.
The Fix for Broken Ranked Lobbies
Riot has admitted that while previous updates helped balance out matches, they also created a very frustrating side effect. Players were seeing wild rank gaps in their lobbies and feeling like the RR penalty for losing was way higher than the reward for winning.
To fix this, the developers have adjusted how RR gains and losses are calculated right now. If you perform well individually, the system will reward you more heavily. If you underperform, you will lose more. This means your individual impact will finally carry more weight, saving you from losing massive amounts of RR just because your teammates decided to throw.
At the very top of the ladder, Immortal and Radiant players are getting more protection against win traders. Riot has already started banning top ladder accounts for win trading and is investing heavily in detection methods to ensure the Radiant leaderboards stay clean.
Riot also confirmed that the gun buddy reward system is dying. The Act 3 and Act 6 buddies will be the last of their kind. Starting on day one of Season 2027, players will receive a completely new type of ranked reward that evolves with you as you play throughout the year.
Neon and Shotguns Are Finally Getting Nerfed Today
You no longer have to wait for relief from the current meta. Riot pushed the Neon and shotgun nerfs up from Patch 13.0, and they are live right now in Patch 12.09.
Neon was too evasive and broke the tactical rules of the game. Now, her High Gear ability no longer gives her any air speed bonus when jumping. If a Neon player jumps while sprinting, they drop to melee speed. Plus, her fuel only regenerates on a kill if her ultimate is active. Riot also added clear visual effects to show exactly where her slide starts and ends, making her much easier to track and shoot.
Shotguns are getting hit just as hard. The Bucky, Judge, and Shorty are all taking massive accuracy penalties while running, walking, crouch walking, and jumping. Crouching now applies a flat 15 percent accuracy multiplier across all shotguns, which is a huge nerf to the Judge and Shorty. Run and gun shotgun plays are basically dead.
Looking ahead to Patch 13.0, Riot plans to help out Initiators by lowering their signature ability cooldowns from 60 seconds back down to 50 seconds. They are also looking at buffs for the new Bandit pistol to make it useful outside of just pistol rounds.
Replay Sharing Is Coming
Riot launched the basic replay system last year, but sharing VODs with friends or coaches has remained annoying. That changes in Patch 12.10.
A new button will appear on your friends’ profiles when you view their match history. You will be able to click it to download and watch their replay directly in your client. This is going to be massive for getting coaching or just proving to your duo that they actually did whiff that easy shot.
New Modes and Chaos
Skirmish Ascension is already live, but Riot is planning to get much weirder with the arcade modes soon.
The team confirmed they are building a new mode that combines Replication with All Random, One Site. You will get the chaos of multiple identical agents fighting on a single site with different abilities every round. They also teased a new short form spike mode with smaller teams coming in Act 4, and a completely unhinged mode based on a haywire combat simulation dropping in Act 5.
If you are a Neon main, it is time to hit the range and learn how to rifle. For everyone else, enjoy the cleaner fights and fairer ranked gains starting today.
