To craft the Wolf Fur Cape in Valheim, you need 6 Wolf Pelts, 4 Silver, and 1 Wolf Trophy. Most of these materials come from the Mountain biome, making the cape difficult to obtain when you first reach this stage of progression.
The Wolf Fur Cape is worth the effort because it provides Frost Resistance. Once equipped, it makes exploring Mountains considerably easier and is also useful when venturing into the Deep North.
How to Craft the Wolf Fur Cape
You need the following materials to make a Wolf Fur Cape:
| Material | Amount |
|---|---|
| Wolf Pelt | 6 |
| Silver | 4 |
| Wolf Trophy | 1 |
Wolf Pelts and the Wolf Trophy come from killing wolves, while Silver must be mined in the Mountains.
The challenge is surviving long enough to collect everything. Mountains represent the fourth major biome tier in Valheim’s progression, and both the enemies and freezing environment can quickly kill an unprepared character.
How to Get Wolf Pelts and a Wolf Trophy
Wolves are found throughout Mountain biomes, including around the lower sections of mountains.
Killing them provides the Wolf Pelts required for the cape, while you’ll also need to keep hunting until you obtain a Wolf Trophy.
Wolves can be surprisingly dangerous. They’re fast, hit hard, and become particularly difficult to manage when several attack simultaneously.
An atgeir is an excellent weapon for dealing with them.
Its long reach helps keep wolves away from you, while its attacks can stagger them and create opportunities to finish them safely. Two hits from its standard combo can stun wolves, while the alternate spinning attack is especially useful when you’re surrounded because it can stagger multiple enemies.
How to Survive the Mountains Before Getting the Wolf Cape
There’s an obvious problem with crafting your first Wolf Fur Cape: you need to enter the freezing Mountains to obtain its materials, but the cape itself is one of the items that protects you from freezing.
Until you have appropriate clothing, you’ll need another source of Frost Resistance.
The easiest solution is Frost Resistance Mead.
Alternatively, Campfires can provide temporary warmth in suitable locations, although relying on fires while extensively exploring a Mountain is considerably less convenient.
Wolves can also appear around the lower areas of mountains, so you may be able to collect some Pelts without spending too much time deeper inside the biome.
How to Make Frost Resistance Mead
Frost Resistance Mead requires a Mead Base made from:
- Honey
- Thistle
- Bloodbags
- Greydwarf Eyes
Prepare the Mead Base using a Mead Ketill, then place it into a Fermenter and wait for the fermentation process to finish.
Bring enough Frost Resistance Mead for your trip before attempting to explore the Mountains for Silver and wolves.
Without Frost Resistance or suitable warm equipment, the Freezing effect will continuously damage you in the Mountain biome.
Can You Use a Lox Cape Instead?
The Lox Cape provides similar protection from the cold and can technically be used instead of the Wolf Fur Cape.
However, it doesn’t provide an easy way to skip Mountain progression.
Crafting a Lox Cape also requires Silver, which means you’ll still need to enter the Mountains and obtain the metal before you can make one. Loxes themselves are also found in the dangerous Plains biome.
For normal progression, Frost Resistance Mead remains the practical way to survive the Mountains until you’ve crafted your first permanent piece of cold-resistant equipment.
Wolf Fur Cape Stats
The Wolf Fur Cape provides 1 Armor, but its most important benefit is Frost Resistance.
Frost Resistance prevents the harmful effects associated with Cold and Freezing conditions. That means Mountain temperatures won’t continuously drain your health, while traveling in cold conditions at night won’t impose the same stamina penalties.
The cape also reduces damage from Frost-based attacks, giving it additional defensive value beyond simply protecting you from the environment.
Its cold protection remains useful later when exploring the Deep North, so the Wolf Fur Cape isn’t something you’ll immediately outgrow after finishing the Mountains.
Once you have 6 Wolf Pelts, 4 Silver, and a Wolf Trophy, craft the cape and equip it before your next Mountain expedition. Removing the need to constantly rely on Frost Resistance Mead makes further exploration, combat, and resource gathering much easier.
