How to Get the Grappling Hook in Valheim 1.0

The Grappling Hook is one of Valheim 1.0’s most useful traversal tools, especially once you start exploring the Deep North. To craft one, you need a Hook, 10 Yggdrasil Wood, 10 Refined Eitr, and four Mandibles, then take everything to a Black Forge.

The hardest ingredient is the Hook itself. It cannot be crafted and must be found inside a Dvergr Treasure Chest in a Mistlands Infested Mine. Picking up your first Hook also unlocks the Grappling Hook crafting recipe.

Valheim Grappling Hook Crafting Recipe

You need the following materials:

Material Amount Source
Hook 1 Dvergr Treasure Chests in Infested Mines
Yggdrasil Wood 10 Yggdrasil trees in the Mistlands
Refined Eitr 10 Eitr Refinery
Mandibles 4 Seeker Soldiers

Once you have everything, craft the Grappling Hook at a Black Forge.

All four ingredients come from Mistlands progression, meaning you can obtain the Grappling Hook before setting foot in the Deep North.

Where to Find a Hook

Hooks are found inside Infested Mines, the large dungeons scattered throughout the Mistlands.

You’re specifically looking for Dvergr Treasure Chests. A Hook has a chance to appear inside these chests, including those located in hidden areas of an Infested Mine.

Finding one isn’t guaranteed. You may completely clear a mine without receiving a Hook, in which case you’ll need to locate another Infested Mine and continue searching.

Make sure to thoroughly explore each dungeon before leaving.

Some hidden sections are concealed behind small stone doors decorated with glowing blue symbols or glyphs. These areas can contain valuable treasure chests and are easy to overlook when moving quickly through a mine.

Most importantly, the Hook isn’t an enemy drop. Killing additional Seekers won’t improve your chances of finding one. Your objective is to locate and open the appropriate treasure chests.

You only need one Hook to unlock the recipe and craft your first Grappling Hook. Additional Hooks are useful if you want to make extras for other players.

How to Get Yggdrasil Wood

The recipe requires 10 Yggdrasil Wood.

You can harvest Yggdrasil Wood from the enormous Yggdrasil trees found throughout the Mistlands. A Blackmetal Axe is sufficient to cut them down and collect the resource.

If you’ve already progressed through a substantial portion of the Mistlands, gathering 10 pieces should be relatively straightforward.

How to Get Refined Eitr

You’ll also need 10 Refined Eitr.

Refined Eitr is produced at an Eitr Refinery by processing Sap and Soft Tissue.

Sap can be extracted from Ancient Roots using Sap Extractors, while Soft Tissue is obtained from several Mistlands sources, including the enormous skulls scattered around the biome.

Players who have already started crafting Mistlands magical equipment should have access to the infrastructure required to produce Refined Eitr.

How to Get Mandibles

The final ingredient is four Mandibles.

Mandibles drop from Seeker Soldiers in the Mistlands. These creatures are considerably larger and tougher than regular Seekers, so prepare for a more demanding fight when hunting them.

Once you’ve collected four Mandibles, you have everything needed for this part of the recipe.

How to Craft the Grappling Hook

After finding the Hook, the remaining process is straightforward:

  1. Find a Hook in a Dvergr Treasure Chest inside an Infested Mine.
  2. Pick it up to unlock the Grappling Hook recipe.
  3. Gather 10 Yggdrasil Wood.
  4. Produce 10 Refined Eitr.
  5. Collect four Mandibles from Seeker Soldiers.
  6. Take everything to a Black Forge.
  7. Craft the Grappling Hook.

Make sure you’re using a Black Forge rather than a regular Forge. The Grappling Hook belongs to the Mistlands tier of crafting progression.

How to Use the Grappling Hook

The Grappling Hook is a two-handed traversal tool, meaning you can’t hold a weapon or shield while actively using it.

On the default PC controls:

Control Action
Left Mouse Button Prepare and fire the Grappling Hook
Space Reel toward the anchor point
Right Mouse Button Release the hook

Aim toward a suitable cliff, wall, structure, or other surface and prepare the hook before firing.

There is a brief preparation delay, so don’t rely on the Grappling Hook as a last-second reaction when you’re already falling.

It also doesn’t function like the swinging grappling hooks found in some action games. Instead, you attach yourself to an anchor point and use the jump button to pull your character toward it.

That makes the tool particularly effective for climbing and other vertical movement.

The Grappling Hook can be used repeatedly without consuming ammunition or another resource for every shot. Stamina still matters, however, and using the hook doesn’t automatically protect you from fall damage.

Where to Use the Grappling Hook

The Grappling Hook is immediately useful in the Mistlands, where steep mountains, cliffs, and uneven terrain can make navigating relatively short distances frustrating.

It becomes even more valuable in the Deep North, where you can use it to:

  • Scale steep cliffs
  • Reach elevated platforms
  • Navigate vertical dungeon sections
  • Recover from difficult positions
  • Cross gaps and broken structures
  • Reach entrances located above ground level

One of its most important applications is exploring the Gates of Mörkhalla.

Using the Grappling Hook at the Gates of Mörkhalla

The enormous Gates of Mörkhalla don’t provide a convenient entrance at ground level.

Instead, you’ll need to reach an elevated section of the structure before making your way inside. The Grappling Hook provides a straightforward method of reaching this raised entrance without relying on more cumbersome building or traversal solutions.

Its usefulness doesn’t end once you’re through the entrance.

Mörkhalla features significant verticality, gaps, and damaged sections that make the Grappling Hook valuable for navigating the interior as well.

Should You Get the Grappling Hook Before the Deep North?

Yes, crafting a Grappling Hook before seriously exploring the Deep North is highly recommended.

Every ingredient is available through the Mistlands, so there’s no need to enter the Deep North before making one. The only potentially time-consuming step is finding a Hook inside an Infested Mine because its appearance in Dvergr Treasure Chests isn’t guaranteed.

Once crafted, however, the Grappling Hook gives you a reusable mobility tool that makes difficult terrain easier to handle and becomes particularly valuable when you reach Mörkhalla.

If your Mistlands progression is already well established, finding a Hook and crafting the Grappling Hook should be one of your final preparations before heading north.
