Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol Explained: Hero Roles, Perks, and Upgrade Modules

Marvel Rivals is introducing its most unexpected twist yet: Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol, a brand-new PvP auto battler game mode. This experimental tab reimagines what players can expect from a hero shooter, allowing one-on-one strategic battles where players pre-select teams of heroes and perks, then let them auto-fight across multiple rounds.

Launching on June 6, the mode enters early access and initially pits players against bots, though full PvP is expected with the final build. The interface features unique positioning tools, stat bonuses, and upgrade modules mid-match. While the mechanics are basic now, the mode includes randomized perks and character synergies that hint at more depth ahead.

How the Game Mode Works (Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol)

Ultron’s Battle Matrix gives you control over a squad of six heroes. Players draft a combination of tanks, supports, and damage dealers like Ultron, Invisible Woman, Star-Lord, Magneto, and more. Each round offers new upgrade cards such as damage boosts, ability cooldown reductions, or enhanced healing denial.

As expected from an auto battler, placement plays a key role—tanks go upfront, supports and ranged attackers in the back. However, players also retain limited manual control, able to intervene and fire shots or use abilities mid-battle. Despite this, the bots remain passive and the AI feels underwhelming for now.

Rewards and Leaderboards

Even in this early form, Ultron’s mode comes with a dedicated reward track. Players will receive an exclusive Ultron spray and emoji by completing three and ten matches, with further emojis unlocked through gameplay points. There’s also a leaderboard tied to your in-game rating (likely a hidden MMR system), although it currently lacks detailed breakdowns.

More clarity around rewards and progression is expected when the PvP version goes live. For now, the experience is more about testing mechanics than competitive matchmaking.

Jeff and Wolverine Skins Now Available

The store also includes two new skins:

  • Jeff MVP (Legendary): Comes with unique jump, attack, bubble, underground, and ultimate sound effects. It also includes animated nameplates, sprays, and an emote.

  • Wolverine Epic Skin: A darker, more armored look for Wolverine with a matching spray, emote, and static nameplate—but no exclusive sound effects.

These cosmetic items bring some polish and fan service to the update. Jeff’s MVP skin especially stands out for its playful animations and layered audio cues.

First Impressions and Concerns

The decision to add a fully separate game mode this far outside Marvel Rivals’ traditional gameplay is bold. While early bot matches show promise, the current version feels more like a tech demo than a fully realized experience. Many mechanics—like targeting logic and perk explanations—still lack clarity.

That said, it’s rare to see a hero shooter attempt something this experimental. Whether Ultron’s Battle Matrix becomes a core feature or a limited-time experiment will likely depend on how the community responds once real PvP matches open up.

Ultron’s Battle Matrix brings a genre mashup no one saw coming. With new skins, a reward track, and a PvP mode set for full release on June 6, Marvel Rivals is heading into surprising territory. While it’s rough around the edges now, the potential for a permanent alt-mode or seasonal LTM is very real.
