The Finals Update 8.6.1 — Hotfix and Dev Stream Recap

The latest The Finals update dropped alongside a developer livestream packed with new features, community insights, and a surprise hotfix. Between the launch of Ghoul Rush, gameplay balance changes, and fresh cosmetic drops, Embark Studios continues to refine how the game feels week to week. Here’s everything that went down in patch 8.6.1 and what came out of the dev chat.

Ghoul Rush Brings a New Survivor Twist

The Halloween-themed limited-time mode Ghoul Rush has taken over playlists. It’s a free-for-all survivor event inspired by zombie modes, where players turn into ghouls after elimination and hunt down the remaining survivors. Some fans have praised the solo chaos, while others hoped the survivors could form teams for a more tactical setup. Despite that feedback, it’s been well-received as a refreshing experiment that keeps matches unpredictable.

Team Deathmatch received its own small but meaningful tweak: defibrillators are now disabled. Respawns are faster and more fluid, letting players change loadouts without waiting for revives. It’s a smart quality-of-life improvement aimed at maintaining the fast-paced nature the mode was designed for.

Map Additions and Power Shift Changes

Patch 8.6 introduced the Nozomi Citadel map to the Power Shift rotation — a welcome addition that suits the mode’s objective-based playstyle. Embark Studios said the location was chosen because its layout complements the pushing and defending phases central to Power Shift. The map’s verticality and structure make it a standout for coordinated teams.

The patch also improved instant replay functionality, adding projectile tracking and turret POVs. Grenades, traps, and other indirect tools now display cleanly in replays, which is perfect for creators breaking down highlight clips or strategizing with teammates.

Social Features and Security Rollout

A major usability boost arrived with the ability to change Embark ID in-game rather than through the website. Players can now update their display name every 30 days directly in the client. Even better, Discord integration has been added, allowing for direct party invites and status displays that show playtime and lobby info.

Behind the scenes, Embark Studios began rolling out Denuvo Anti-Cheat and new detection systems to fight spoofing devices such as Cronus adapters. Some players already see Denuvo prompts on launch, and full deployment is expected by next week. The studio confirmed these tools are part of a larger anti-cheat expansion to target exploits from every angle.

Hotfix 8.6.1 and Community Notes

The smaller 8.6.1 hotfix fixed two common issues: crashes affecting certain players and a bug where the “Open to Friends” toggle wasn’t saving between sessions. These fixes are live across all platforms.

The developer livestream also revealed a few behind-the-scenes updates. Books Esports is replacing Emerald Grinders at the upcoming tournament due to travel visa complications — a reminder of how external factors can still affect competitive events. The team also teased a meet-and-greet on Thursday before the Dream Hack Majors, giving fans a chance to talk with Embark’s developers.
