Blizzard just pushed a hotfix for StarCraft II’s Patch 5.0.16, and the biggest change flips a core matchup dynamic between Protoss and Zerg. Force fields now survive Corrosive Bile hits instead of popping instantly, which means Sentries just got a lot more useful in real fights.
StarCraft II: Patch 5.0.16 Dynamic Balancing Matrix
| Feature Layer | Confirmed Specifications & System Overhauls |
| Sentry Buffs | Blocks Corrosive Bile instant-pops by forcing one hit to only drain 50% remaining duration |
| Vespine Mining | Trims maximum default gas reserves down from 2,500 to 2,000 per Vespine Geyser node |
| Widow Mine Buff | Slashes projectile locking target locks down from 1.07 seconds to a rapid 0.85 seconds |
| Reaper Production | Slows down early Terran visual pressure by raising Reaper build times from 32 to 34 seconds |
| Larva Inject Pool | Throttles natural baseline Zerg larva spawn cycles down from 9.5 seconds to 9.9 seconds |
| Mothership Hull | Adjusts late-game survivability splits by slicing shields to 200 while raising health to 400 |

If you play Protoss into Zerg on ladder right now, this matters immediately. Bile used to shred a force field the moment it landed, making Sentries feel like a waste of gas against any Zerg army with Ravagers. That is no longer true.
This hotfix also touches Terran and Zerg, with changes to Widow Mines, Reapers, larva timing, and gas income. Here is what actually changed, who benefits, and what to try on ladder this week.
The force field change that has everyone talking
Bile no longer instantly destroys a force field. Instead, one hit removes 50% of the field’s remaining duration. A standard force field lasts 11 seconds, so a single Bile now leaves roughly 5.5 seconds of wall left standing instead of wiping it out completely.
Factor in the 2.5 second Bile cast time plus reaction time, and a force field dropped right as Bile lands can realistically block a chokepoint for close to double what it used to. For Protoss players, that turns Sentries back into a real answer against Ravager pokes instead of a coin flip you lose every time.
For Zerg, this is the change to watch heading into your next ladder session. Mass Sentry stalls that felt impossible to pull off in the current patch suddenly become viable again, and if Protoss finds a way to survive early Zerg pressure on three bases, the midgame could swing hard in their favor.
Gas just got tighter for everyone
Default Vespine Geyser gas dropped from 2,500 down to 2,000. On a standard four base setup, that is 2,000 less gas available compared to the version of the patch players had been on all week.
This hits four base turtling directly. Armies built around heavy gas tech, like Colossus, Disruptor, or Banshee builds, will run dry faster if you sit on four bases too long. The fix here is simple: start planning your fifth and sixth base earlier than you have been, because staying parked on four bases is no longer free.
Widow Mine buff nobody asked for, but Terran will take it
Widow Mine lock on time dropped from 1.07 seconds to 0.85 seconds. That is a meaningful buff to mine drops and defense against Zergling Baneling runbys, since mines now arm and fire noticeably faster.
Terran players doing mine drops into Protoss or Zerg mineral lines should feel an immediate difference this patch. Pair a faster Widow Mine with an early Reaper scout to confirm base count before committing to a drop timing.
Reaper nerf slows down early Terran aggression
Reaper build time went up from 32 to 34 seconds, stacking on top of an earlier increase from the original 30 second build time. If you lean on early Reaper harass to poke Zerg drone counts, expect that first Reaper to show up later than you are used to, which gives Zerg queens more time to get set up before the pressure starts.
Zerg larva rate: a nerf disguised as a buff
Larva spawn rate moved from 9.5 seconds to 9.9 seconds. Read quickly, that number going up looks like a buff, but it actually means larva spawns slower now. It is still faster than the 10.7 second rate from the previous major patch, so Zerg has not lost the overall economy gain from the 8 worker rework, but this hotfix trims a bit of that power back.
Mothership rework changes late game Protoss
The Mothership had its shields cut from 350 to 200, while its base health went up from 350 to 400. Practically, that means the Mothership dies faster to burst damage that ignores shields, like Baneling or Disruptor hits, but survives longer against sustained low damage attacks. If you have been leaning on early Mothership timing pushes, this changes how that unit trades in a straight fight, so test it before committing gas to it on ladder.
Adept, Templar, and a queen inject fix
Adept pre-Warpgate build time increased from 30 to 33 seconds, while High Templar and Dark Templar pre-Warpgate build times dropped from 43 to 40 seconds. The slower Adept opens a small window for early pool timings and aggressive Zergling builds to punish Protoss before that first Adept is ready to defend.
Blizzard also reverted a queen inject shuffle adjustment that had been in the patch, restoring the previous inject method. If your macro cycle felt slightly off after the last patch, this fix brings it back to normal.
