Sony PlayStation Rumours: Upcoming Events, Handhelds, and New Product Variations

A reliable source suggests that a new Sony PlayStation event, such as a showcase or State of Play, could be on the horizon. Wccftech reports that insider Billy Bilcon, known for his accurate leaks, revealed that Sony is preparing a significant amount of PlayStation content behind the scenes. Although no confirmation exists about an event, the volume of upcoming announcements indicates something substantial.

Bilcon’s statements imply that the announcements are unlikely limited to the Game Awards, which makes it plausible that Sony has additional plans for December. A recent PlayStation trailer teased a December 3, 2024, date, coinciding with the brand’s 30th anniversary, fueling speculation about a possible event. However, insider Jeff Grubb stated there is no PlayStation event planned, adding to the uncertainty.

Sony Prepares for the Game Awards

Sony may use the Game Awards as a platform to unveil upcoming projects. Often referred to as the “end-of-year E3,” the Game Awards attract major announcements. Publishers increasingly prioritize this event, leveraging its prominence to share high-profile news.

This year’s Game Awards take place on December 12, leaving room for Sony to make announcements earlier in December. Speculation about a secretive PlayStation showcase persists, but insiders advise caution. Even though expectations are low, people are getting excited about the confirmed content coming.

Sony’s New Handheld Rumors Gain Momentum

Bloomberg recently corroborated rumors about Sony developing a new handheld device. Described as a portable PlayStation 5, this device aims to rival the Nintendo Switch 2. Earlier reports suggested compatibility with PS4 games, but Bloomberg claims the handheld could natively support PS5 games, making it stand out from remote-play devices like the PlayStation Portal.

Although the project remains in early development stages, Sony could potentially delay or cancel it. However, the success of the PlayStation Portal has reignited Sony’s interest in handheld devices, increasing the likelihood of this new device reaching the market. Analysts believe this move positions Sony to compete effectively with both Nintendo and Microsoft, the latter reportedly prototyping an Xbox handheld.

The Switch 2’s anticipated power and third-party support could challenge Sony’s ecosystem. To remain competitive, Sony may prioritize launching a robust handheld device capable of leveraging its extensive PS4 and PS5 library.

Upcoming Sony PlayStation Variations: DualSense Edge and Pulse Series in Black

Reliable insider Billy Bilcon also leaked that Sony plans to release black versions of the DualSense Edge, Pulse Elite, and Pulse Explorer. These updates cater to players who prefer the sleek black aesthetic over the current two-tone design.

This move aligns with Sony’s history of predominantly black consoles. Players who purchased black plates for their PS5s may find these new options more appealing. While no confirmation exists about whether the PlayStation Portal will receive a black variation, Sony might aim for a unified product lineup in both black and the original two-tone design.

Sony could announce these product updates during a State of Play or at the Game Awards. Either way, fans eagerly anticipate this new lineup, which enhances customization options and aligns with popular demand. These updates reflect Sony’s focus on expanding its offerings and push Microsoft to the side for now.
