Shopping Carts Are Back In Fortnite OG Season 4—And So Is the Nostalgia

One of the biggest wins in Fortnite OG Season 4 is the return of the original grass textures. Players first noticed the change during a teaser in a French soccer promo, which actually showcased the Season 4 map. This version of the grass isn’t overly tall, which means players on DirectX11 and DirectX12 can finally enjoy smoother gameplay without being forced into performance mode. The lighting and sky tweaks also enhance that nostalgic feel. Dusty Divot stands out as a nearly perfect recreation. For many, landing there brought back strong memories—especially with hop rocks now functional and looking just as they did in 2018.

Gun Models, Audio Fixes, and Weapon Nostalgia

Season 4 doesn’t just revive the map—it also nails several gun-specific details. The TACTICAL SMG was re-enabled with the correct audio, the SCAR’s pullout sound was restored, and the pump shotgun sounds more like its old self. Epic Games even fixed the hand cannon’s structure damage and reintroduced the heavy shotgun’s original animation and audio.

These changes may seem minor, but to longtime players, each fix adds to the authenticity. And yes, shopping carts are back—one of Fortnite’s first vehicles and still one of the most fun to use in chaotic mid-fight moments.

Performance and Optimization on PC

Performance has quietly improved in this update. Players using DirectX11 and DirectX12 report better FPS without needing performance mode. This suggests that Epic Games may finally be acting on community feedback, especially from Twitter. With these optimizations, Fortnite OG feels more polished than earlier seasons.

Live Event Accuracy and Bot Removal Leaks

The upcoming live event is reportedly on schedule, unlike earlier concerns about it being rushed. Based on comparisons to the 2018 timeline, it’s closely following the original sequence, including the slow build of the rocket. This has fans hopeful that more original-style content is on the way.

Another exciting development is the potential removal of bots. Leaker Alli Jax recently mentioned a new casual mode in the works. With Ranked OG now removed due to low player count, the need for a separate casual queue has never been greater. Long matchmaking queues, especially in higher ranks, show the need for a more accessible alternative.

A Better Casual Mode Could Change Everything

For this to work, the new casual mode needs to go beyond just “easy lobbies.” A true nostalgic experience would include original movement, possibly even the removal of turbo building. While controversial, this could make the mode feel closer to Fortnite’s roots and balance out some of the more overpowering weapons.

Epic must avoid the mistake of filling these lobbies with bots. Players want real opponents, even if they’re less competitive. Call of Duty succeeded with this approach and saw a massive bump in its player base. Fortnite could do the same—if done right.
