‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ creators have no plans for second season

In 2010, we were treated to the Edgar Wright film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s popular cartoons, and that story is now back in anime form on Netflix with the new spinoff Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. Despite the success of this anime series, which debuted with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the creators are not planning a second season.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off creators Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski have spoken in a new interview about the possibilities of a second season for their very well-received anime series. Although the Netflix show has received very rave reviews and seems to be in the taste of fans, O’Malley and Grabinski currently have no plans for a sequel and see it as a one-time standalone one-season show for now.

One season

“It stands on its own for now. We’re happy with what we’ve created. We’ve put everything into it,” O’Malley told Rolling Stone. “We don’t have ideas sitting on the shelf. We pretty much put them all in. I never say never, but right now it looks like it will take about 50 different wonders at once to make a second season possible, so we’ll see. People always complain about the way shows get cancelled after one season. So we immediately hedged and tried to make a standalone season.” Grabinski also confirmed that a second season is probably not in the cards: “We gave everything we had and we think the series has a great ending that we’re proud of.”

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was released earlier this month, nearly twenty years after the beloved graphic novel was released and thirteen years after the film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Almost the entire cast of that film returned for this animated series, as Michael Cera, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Brie Larson and Aubrey Plaza, among others, are all back in the mix. The series takes us back to Toronto “not so long ago,” where a 23-year-old Scott Pilgrim plays in the band Sex Bob-Omb with his friends Stephen Stills and Kim Pine. Although he is a musician with no motivation, Scott is determined to win a contest that could land him a recording contract. His goal is complicated when he meets the girl of his dreams: Ramona Flowers. After they get to know each other, Scott discovers she has seven evil exes he must defeat in order to date her.

The series has been available to stream on Netflix since Nov. 17. You can watch the trailer below!
