Rogue Prince of Persia Joins PS Plus as a Day One Title

August turned out to be a standout month for the PlayStation Plus catalog. Not only did the lineup deliver expected heavy hitters, but it also brought along a couple of surprise day one titles that elevated the update. Between Ubisoft’s latest Prince of Persia spin-off and a brand-new atmospheric indie adventure, this month feels like one of the strongest in recent memory.

Rogue Prince of Persia Joins PS Plus Extra

Ubisoft’s The Rogue Prince of Persia, developed by Evil Empire, left early access this month and immediately dropped into PlayStation Plus Extra as a day one addition. This roguelike action-platformer combines fluid 2D acrobatics with intense combat and fast-paced traversal.

The reception has been impressive. On Steam, over 1,300 reviews currently sit at 88% positive, while the most recent wave of reviews since full release shows an even stronger 98% approval rating. This surge reflects how well the game has been refined through early access.

Each run challenges players with procedurally generated levels, branching paths, and a mix of unique weapons and medallions to craft new builds. Death only resets progress temporarily, as knowledge gained from each attempt feeds into stronger future runs. Agile movement, wall-running, and chain combos ensure that speed and precision remain at the heart of the gameplay loop.

Sword of the Sea Launches Day One on PS Plus

Another surprise for subscribers is Sword of the Sea, developed by Giant Squid, the studio behind Abzû and The Pathless. This title blends the serene flow of surfing with the energy of skateboarding and snowboarding, creating a meditative yet action-packed experience.

Players ride the Hover Sword across shifting dunes and flowing seas, pulling off tricks and navigating skate-park-like ruins. The artistic direction is by Matt Nava, with music by Austin Wintory, continuing their partnership from Journey. The game typically retails for $29.99, but Extra subscribers can dive in at no additional cost. With its unique blend of atmosphere and momentum-driven traversal, it’s one of the most original additions to the PS Plus library this year.

Other PS Plus August Additions

The August update didn’t stop at day one titles. Several major games joined the catalog:

  • Mortal Kombat 1 – NetherRealm’s latest fighter joins the service.

  • Spider-Man Remastered – A polished upgrade of Insomniac’s superhero classic.

  • Earth Defense Force 6 – The long-running alien invasion shooter series continues.

  • Unicorn Overlord – A tactical JRPG from Vanillaware, developers of 13 Sentinels.

  • Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key – The final entry in the Atelier Ryza trilogy.

  • Indika, Herald Halibut, and Coral Island – Unique indie experiences covering narrative-driven adventures and cozy farming.

On the premium side, Capcom’s survival horror classics Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 Nemesis were added. Premium members also gained access to a five-hour trial of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, one of the year’s most anticipated releases.

Why August is a Strong Month for PS Plus

August stands out for PS Plus with big titles, unique indies, and surprise day one launches. The Rogue Prince of Persia adds freshness, Sword of the Sea brings depth, and premium members get a Death Stranding 2 trial, already in game-of-the-year talks.

Sony’s approach this month shows how the PS Plus catalog can stay competitive by balancing recognizable names with unexpected additions. For subscribers, it’s a good time to revisit classics and test out some of the newest releases without additional cost.
