Roblox’s July 2025 update has upset many players across the platform, not only for the volume of new features but also for several controversial changes. One of the biggest talking points is the renaming of “Friends” to “Connections.” Roblox RTC reported this change with widespread backlash from the community. The move seems aimed at repositioning the platform as a broader social and business hub, but players aren’t buying it.
Most users feel the update detaches Roblox from its identity as a game-centric platform. Many voiced concerns that turning “Friends” into “Connections” makes Roblox feel sterile, corporate, and out of touch with its audience. Even a classic feature like the “Friendship badge” may become obsolete, which only adds to the frustration.
This shift connects to broader social updates like “Trusted Connections,” but players are left wondering if the new terminology was necessary at all.
PBR Textures Delayed After Rollout
On the technical side, the update introduced long-requested support for PBR (physically based rendering) textures in UGC accessories—at least temporarily. Bloxy News confirmed the feature briefly launched before being placed on hold. A dev forum post acknowledged technical issues that forced the rollback.
These new textures allow creators to simulate surfaces like fabric or metal more realistically, giving Roblox items a shinier and more detailed look. It marked a major step forward in visual fidelity, especially for those working with UGC. Transparency support isn’t available yet, but it’s reportedly coming soon.
Although the update was pulled, Roblox noted that it will return after fixes are implemented, so creators can expect this visual upgrade in the near future.
Trusted Connections and Age Estimation Stir Concerns
Roblox also introduced “Trusted Connections” for users aged 13 and above. These connections unlock relaxed text filtering and enable real-time voice chat in parties. With voice now being a key feature in immersive games and experiences, this is a major shift. Age estimation is required to unlock it, using a selfie video to confirm approximate age via Roblox’s partner, Persona.
This raises obvious concerns. AI age scans could be bypassed by kids using a parent’s face, and many doubt the system’s reliability. Verified users get expressive chat and best friends, but only within set age limits.
For example, only users aged 18+ can message others with full expressive chat, and a 13–17-year-old can’t be added as a trusted connection unless real-life verification steps are completed. Critics argue that this overcomplicates social features and introduces privacy risks.
Offline Mode and Playtime Tracking Finally Arrive
Not all updates were met with criticism. Roblox confirmed it will begin rolling out “Invisible Mode,” letting players appear offline. This long-awaited privacy option mirrors similar features in other platforms like Discord and Steam.
Another highly praised feature is playtime tracking. Players will soon see how much time they spend in each Roblox experience, along with optional daily time limits. Roblox RTC first shared this update, and players quickly welcomed it for promoting better screen-time habits.
Smaller Quality of Life Changes
Roblox also added a separate volume slider for party voice chat. The main volume setting will still control menu and sound effects, but now party voice levels can be independently adjusted. Although the feature doesn’t yet apply to all voice chat, it’s a welcome step toward better sound balance in multiplayer sessions.

The built-in freecam tool also received an update. It now supports camera tilting using the Z and C keys, allowing content creators and players to capture more dynamic footage. Small, but useful.
Lastly, Roblox is addressing username filter issues that have plagued the signup process. Zenha reported that the filter system is now working better, with failed attempts resulting in blocked account creation even if the interface momentarily displays a censored name as valid.
