Riot Reveals Valorant VCT 2026: New Format, Cities, and Challenger Access

Assuming the spotlight wasn’t already bright enough on Champions 2025, Riot Games just dropped major updates about the Valorant VCT 2026 season — and even teased changes to the Abyss map in a surprise video. From a revamped competitive structure to triple elimination brackets and new global destinations, next year’s circuit looks to shake things up before the even bigger overhaul planned for 2027.

Abyss Map Update May Have Been Leaked

A recent lighthearted video from Riot unexpectedly gave fans a peek at potential changes to the Abyss map. The clip, filmed on the map itself, revealed new geometry — most notably a large box and what looks like a slightly narrower pathway. While it’s unclear whether these are visual tricks or actual redesigns, many players suspect Riot may be testing an updated layout.

Abyss hasn’t seen major tweaks in a while, and the possibility of adjustments, especially around B Site, has players buzzing. The map’s structure often favors defenders, and a few layout refinements could freshen competitive play. If these visuals hint at real updates, 2026 may kick off with a long-awaited refresh.

Valorant VCT 2026: Global Event Schedule

Riot also unveiled the key global stops for the Valorant VCT 2026 season. The circuit will include:

  • Masters Santiago, Chile – The first-ever Valorant Masters event in Latin America.

  • Masters London, England – The second Masters of the year and London’s first global event.

  • Champions Shanghai, China – The final stop, where the 2026 Valorant World Champion will be crowned.

These cities mark a clear push to expand the VCT’s international reach. The calendar appears to follow the same structure as 2025, with Champions likely concluding around early October. Riot also confirmed each Stage 2 playoff weekend will now be held in new destination cities across regions — doubling the number of live event locations compared to last year.

New Formats and Bracket Play in 2026

Starting next year, every official VCT competition will feature high-stakes, bracket-style formats. This includes Kickoff, Stage competitions, and global events. Kickoff will debut a triple elimination structure — “three strikes and you’re out.” Each region’s winner from this event will earn qualification to Masters Santiago.

Masters tournaments are also expanding from eight to twelve teams, a change widely welcomed by fans after the smaller format was criticized in 2025. Riot aims for more matches, more intense eliminations, and tighter point races across the circuit. This format overhaul suggests a clear effort to inject unpredictability and variety into the professional season.

Challenger Teams Can Reach Champions

One of the biggest announcements concerns Challengers teams. Starting in 2026, tier-two organizations will have a real path to Champions qualification. Winners from regional Challenger playoffs will advance to Stage 2 playoffs, competing directly against partnered tier-one teams for a shot at the season’s biggest tournament.

While it’s unlikely that many (if any) tier-two squads will reach Champions in the first year, this system signals a major shift. It’s also a strong indicator that Ascension tournaments may be phased out in 2027, aligning with Riot’s goal to create a more open, merit-based ecosystem.
