The choice to mercy kill Leni or leave her behind in Chapter 13 of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy does not change the ending, later cutscenes, or overall story. The decision is instead a hidden role-playing moment that determines how Sophia handles her companion’s suffering, with the mercy kill providing the more compassionate resolution.
Major story spoilers for Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy follow.
Leni accompanies Sophia through much of the first half of the game before apparently dying during the encounter with the Minotaur. Sophia unexpectedly finds her again near the climax of Chapter 13, but Leni has been consumed by corruption and is suffering inside the sanctum.
At this point, players can either use the Minoan Sphere to end Leni’s suffering or walk away and continue toward the corrupted Labyrinth.
What Happens If You Mercy Kill Leni?
Using the Minoan Sphere’s light ability on Leni triggers the mercy-kill outcome.
The Sphere covers her in light, purging the corruption and immediately ending her suffering. Leni then passes away peacefully rather than remaining trapped in her corrupted state.
This is the more merciful of the two outcomes. Sophia accepts that she cannot save her companion and instead uses the Sphere to give Leni a peaceful death before continuing deeper into the Labyrinth.
There are no negative gameplay or story consequences for choosing this option.
What Happens If You Spare Leni?
Choosing not to use the Minoan Sphere means Sophia cannot bring herself to kill Leni.
Instead, she apologizes to her companion and leaves the sanctum, continuing toward the corrupted Labyrinth and her confrontation with the Minotaur.
Leni remains behind in her corrupted state, with no indication that her suffering will end. Compared with the mercy-kill sequence, this version of the scene gives the encounter a considerably harsher resolution, as Sophia walks away rather than ending her friend’s torment.
However, leaving Leni alive does not unlock an alternate storyline or cause her to return later.
Does the Leni Choice Change the Ending?
No. Mercy killing Leni or leaving her behind has no effect on the ending of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy.
The game follows a fixed narrative rather than a branching storyline, so this Chapter 13 decision does not alter subsequent events or cutscenes.
There are also no separate endings tied to the choice. Regardless of what you decide, Sophia continues through the Labyrinth and the main story proceeds along the same path.
The decision exists primarily to let the player determine how Sophia responds to an intensely personal moment rather than to create a gameplay consequence.
Should You Mercy Kill Leni?
If you’re looking for the more compassionate outcome, mercy killing Leni is the better choice.
Using the Minoan Sphere ends her suffering immediately and gives Sophia’s companion a peaceful final moment. Leaving without using the Sphere offers no gameplay advantage and instead leaves Leni trapped in her corrupted condition.
Since neither option changes the ending or unlocks additional content, there is no strategic reason to choose one over the other. The difference is entirely emotional: either Sophia finds the resolve to end her friend’s suffering, or she walks away because she cannot bring herself to do it.
Whichever option you select, Resonance ultimately returns to its fixed narrative. The Chapter 13 decision changes Leni’s final moments, but not where Sophia’s journey leads afterward.
