Resident Evil Requiem: Return to Raccoon City and Outbreak Lore

With the announcement trailer for Resident Evil Requiem, Capcom has unveiled the first narrative hints for the ninth mainline entry in the Resident Evil series. Though none of the franchise’s iconic characters make an appearance, the trailer suggests that Requiem has deep ties to a lesser-known entry from the PlayStation 2 era—Resident Evil Outbreak.

Released in 2003 between Resident Evil 3 and the franchise-defining Resident Evil 4, Outbreak marked Capcom’s first foray into online cooperative gameplay. Up to four players could team up to survive the T-virus disaster in Raccoon City, paralleling the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. While familiar faces like Leon Kennedy and Jill Valentine fought elsewhere, Outbreak focused on everyday civilians trying to escape the nightmare, highlighting teamwork, unique character skills, and classic survival horror mechanics like inventory management and fixed camera angles.

Outbreak’s Infection Mechanic Returns

One of Outbreak’s most unique features was its infection mechanic. Each character started a scenario already infected with the virus, and their infection rate increased over time, especially when taking damage. If the virus overtook them, they would transform into zombies and attack their teammates. This mechanic created tension and urgency, forcing players to locate antiviral items or risk losing a teammate—and their progress.

The structure of Outbreak and its sequel Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 involved five scenarios per game, with players selecting one of eight survivors to navigate through various timelines and settings. From bars to underground labs, from zoos to hospitals, the story spanned all corners of Raccoon City and beyond. Although the game didn’t deliver a coherent, linear narrative, key moments hinted at Umbrella’s shadowy operations and laid the groundwork for future revelations.

Alyssa Ashcroft’s Story Takes Center Stage

Requiem’s trailer introduces a new protagonist, FBI analyst Grace Saunders, as she receives an assignment to investigate the Renwood Hotel—the site where her mother, Alyssa Ashcroft, was murdered eight years earlier. Alyssa was one of the eight playable characters in Outbreak and File #2. In those games, she worked as a journalist uncovering the dark secrets of the Umbrella Corporation.

One standout scenario in File #2, “Flashback,” takes Alyssa and other survivors to a secluded hospital in the Arklay Mountains. As the level progresses, Alyssa recalls past events involving another journalist named Kurt, who was killed by an infected patient while investigating Umbrella-backed experiments. She eventually uncovers a horrifying truth: the hospital administrator had been feeding lost travelers to a giant plant mutated by the virus. Alyssa and her companions defeat the creature, and her restored memories fuel a vow to expose Umbrella’s crimes.

While Alyssa’s article on Raccoon City was eventually buried due to a government cover-up, her determination is evident in Requiem. The trailer references her life after Raccoon City and reveals that she had a daughter—Grace. Resident Evil 7 already hinted at her survival, with players finding a newspaper article she wrote about disappearances in Dulvey Parish, Louisiana.

Canon Confirmed For Outbreak Fans

Requiem confirms that at least some events from Resident Evil Outbreak and File #2 are now canon. The trailer shows the ruins of Raccoon City, including familiar spots like the Raccoon City Police Department and the massive crater left by the U.S. government’s missile strike. Alyssa’s confirmed fate and the introduction of her daughter suggest a deeply personal storyline grounded in Resident Evil’s earliest horrors.

While it’s unclear whether other Outbreak characters survived, Alyssa’s legacy lives on through Grace. Fans may get a closer look at what unfolded in Raccoon City during Outbreak’s timeline and what remains hidden beneath its rubble.

Resident Evil Requiem releases in February, and it might finally bring closure—and clarity—to a part of the franchise often forgotten. After years of global detours, Capcom’s iconic series looks ready to return home.
