Ranked Frustrations Addressed in Latest Marvel Rivals Dev Update (Strategist Buffs and Vanguard Nerfs)

The latest Marvel Rivals Dev update dives straight into player frustrations with the ranked climb, competitive performance points, and how some heroes seem to rank up much faster than others. In Season 2, the developers introduced a new system that adjusts how many points you gain or lose in ranked matches based on your performance with specific heroes. If you do better than the baseline for your rank and hero, you gain more SR; do worse, and you get less. However, many have noticed this system isn’t fair for every hero, with strategists feeling the most punished and some duelists and vanguards having a much easier time surpassing their baseline.

Players pointed out that this imbalance led to a “strategist strike,” where support picks became even rarer. The devs confirmed the system does create these gaps, and they plan to adjust baseline thresholds for affected roles in future updates. Their goal is for every player to feel rewarded for playing their chosen role at a high level, whether racking up eliminations with Luna Snow or stacking healing stats. These observations directly influenced the current round of balance changes, aimed at making ranked progress more consistent and fair.

Strategist and Vanguard Balance Patch Incoming (Marvel Rivals Dev Update)

The update promises a significant patch early next week, focused on shaking up the strategist role and refining vanguard performance. Strategist players can expect buffs designed to raise their impact and threat level in matches, potentially opening up more team compositions. Speculation points to the devs improving most strategists—possibly excluding Adam, Mantis, and Jeff, though these heroes could also see changes.

Damage tweaks to strategists have already shown how even small adjustments can push a hero up the tier list, and the devs hope to see more of that with the coming update. They also teased that even bigger meta shifts are coming with Patch 2.5, which arrives alongside Ultron’s release.

Buffs and Nerfs: Doctor Strange, Groot, Captain America, and More

Doctor Strange headlines the buff list for vanguards. After dropping from S to B tier due to massive damage falloff, Strange will now see his ultimate cost reduced, allowing him to build it much faster. This change lets him maintain his defensive playstyle but enables more frequent, impactful ultimates—marrying survivability with stronger match-winning potential.

On the other end, top tanks Groot and Captain America will receive survivability nerfs. Groot, considered the best tank through late Season 1.5 and into Season 2, finally faces a reduction, most likely in wall health or overall HP. Captain America, already extremely durable, is expected to lose a bit of health or have minor tweaks to his healing or shield mechanics. Despite these nerfs, both are expected to remain strong meta options.

For duelists, Winter Soldier gets a buff to his “tainted voltage” ability after dropping in win rate from earlier nerfs. His team-up with Captain America will also be improved, possibly with more damage or shorter cooldowns. These adjustments should make Bucky and the team-up pick more viable.

Spider-Man, frequently banned for his powerful combos, will see the range on his uppercut and wombo combos reduced. This means a smaller hitbox and less frustration for players on the receiving end, addressing long-standing complaints about his effectiveness.

Thunderbolts MCU Skin Promotion and Dev Vision (Marvel Rivals Dev Update)

In a first for Marvel Rivals, the game will see direct promotion from an MCU actor—Sebastian Stan, who voices Bucky Barnes—coinciding with a Thunderbolts-inspired skin and the upcoming movie release. This partnership shows the game’s growing connection with the wider Marvel universe and sets the stage for more crossover content.

The developers emphasized that these changes reflect their intent to quickly address balance problems, reward high-level play across all roles, and keep the meta fresh. With more shakeups promised when Ultron arrives, expect the pace of updates to stay high as they respond to player feedback.
