How to Prevent and Cure Corpse Sickness in Project Zomboid

Corpse Sickness is one of the most dangerous environmental hazards in Project Zomboid. As zombie bodies accumulate around your base, they begin releasing harmful fumes that can make your character increasingly ill. If ignored, the sickness can eventually become fatal.

Fortunately, the condition is completely preventable with proper corpse disposal, and even advanced symptoms can usually be treated by leaving contaminated areas. Here’s everything you need to know.

How to Prevent Corpse Sickness

The easiest way to deal with Corpse Sickness is to stop it from developing in the first place.

When large numbers of zombie corpses are left near your safehouse, they eventually produce the Bad Smell effect, which causes your character to become Queasy before progressing into more severe illness.

There are three reliable ways to dispose of bodies:

  • Bury them in graves
  • Burn the corpses
  • Delete them using dumpsters

Keeping the area around your base clean is the best long-term solution.

Burying Corpses

Graves are the safest disposal method and can be created almost anywhere with the proper tools.

To bury zombies:

  1. Find a Shovel or Spade.
  2. Dig a grave.
  3. Carry corpses to the grave.
  4. Place them inside.

Each grave can hold up to five corpses, making it an efficient option for clearing smaller groups of zombies.

The main downside is the time required to dig, leaving you vulnerable if nearby zombies haven’t been cleared first.

Burning Corpses

Burning bodies is much faster but requires additional resources.

You’ll need:

  • A fuel source, such as a Jerry Can
  • A lighter or matches

Pile multiple corpses together, then use the Burn Corpse option from the context menu.

Because fire spreads easily in Project Zomboid, always burn bodies well away from houses, forests, vehicles, or anything else that could ignite.

Using Dumpsters

Dumpsters provide one of the fastest methods for permanently removing corpses.

To use one:

  1. Carry a corpse to a dumpster.
  2. Right-click the dumpster.
  3. Select Drop Corpse Into Dumpster.
  4. Open the dumpster inventory.
  5. Choose Delete All.

Unlike graves, dumpsters effectively remove corpses from the game, allowing you to dispose of unlimited bodies without taking up additional space.

How to Cure Corpse Sickness

If you’ve already become sick, the first priority is leaving the contaminated area.

The earliest symptom is the Queasy moodle. Remaining near large numbers of corpses causes the illness to worsen over time, especially when dozens of bodies are nearby or you can hear flies buzzing around them.

Once you move somewhere clean and away from dead zombies, your condition will gradually improve.

The sooner you leave the affected area, the faster your recovery.

Items That Help

Several items can reduce or manage the effects of Corpse Sickness.

Respirators and Gas Masks

Protective face coverings such as respirators and gas masks reduce your exposure while handling corpses.

Although they don’t make you completely immune, they help you spend more time cleaning up large corpse piles before symptoms become severe.

Lemongrass

Lemongrass is useful for treating nausea and can help lessen the sickness associated with corpse exposure.

Keeping some on hand is worthwhile if you’re regularly clearing heavily infested areas.

Traits Can Affect Recovery

Some character traits make recovering more difficult.

For example, Slow Healer increases the time needed to recover from illnesses and injuries, meaning Corpse Sickness can linger longer than it would for other survivors.

Players using challenging trait combinations should be especially careful about allowing zombie bodies to accumulate near their safehouse.

Tips for Keeping Your Base Safe

To avoid Corpse Sickness becoming a recurring problem:

  • Remove corpses after every major fight.
  • Never let large piles remain outside your base.
  • Use graves for smaller cleanup jobs.
  • Use dumpsters when available for faster disposal.
  • Burn bodies only in open areas away from buildings.
  • Carry a respirator or gas mask while cleaning infected zones.

Regular cleanup is far easier than recovering from advanced sickness, and keeping your surroundings clear will ensure your safehouse remains a healthy place to recover between expeditions.
