Pioner MMO Shooter: What to Expect at Launch

Pioner is an upcoming open-world MMOFPS from GFA Games set in a post-apocalyptic Soviet setting. After several delays, the game is now on track for release this year. It blends PvE and PvP into one seamless world—half of the map focuses on lore-driven exploration and progression, while the other is a dedicated full-PvP zone. From crafting to faction reputation and artifact hunting, the systems in place resemble a mix between The Division and World of Warcraft, but with a grittier Eastern European aesthetic.

First Impressions of Multiplayer Dungeons

The current multiplayer test included one dungeon run on normal difficulty, and even at this early stage, the MMO roots are clearly visible. Dungeons require a group of three players to queue up, and there’s a traditional matchmaking system for those without friends online. Ammo vending machines are available in the lobby, but resource crates—containing ammo, medkits, and grenades—are scattered throughout the dungeon and are personalized for each player. Ammo is replenished based on the weapon you’re holding, which encourages active gear switching mid-run.

Players also get access to a personal stash before entering the dungeon, loaded with weapons, attachments, and armor sets. Unfortunately, backpacks and artifact slots weren’t available during this session. Developers have also locked the FOV slider for now, and the narrow field of view made aiming uncomfortable, although the feature is expected to be fully enabled at launch.

Pioner Combat, Weapons, and Visual Design

While previous single-player testing capped progression at level five, this session started at level eight with skill points disabled. The difference in combat between basic weapons and fully-kitted epic guns is drastic. Decked-out gear massively improves fluidity and precision, despite minor issues with scope animation feeling overly exaggerated during high-RPM firing. Developers are aware and have promised adjustments.

Dungeon design is another highlight. Each room carries its own tactical flow and layout, clearly built with long-term replayability in mind. MMO-style mechanics are present throughout the dungeon, including side objectives, jumping puzzles, and positional defense phases. The level of polish and environmental detail is notable, down to the bricks and lighting effects.

Enemy Variety and Boss Encounters

The enemy faction featured was the Raven Cult, boasting an impressive variety of units—melee trash mobs, armored heavies, snipers, crossbow users, and dogs. Even within this one dungeon, the variety exceeded the enemy diversity seen in two entire Dune regions from other games. Boss fights were mechanically demanding. The first boss, Juggernaut, uses a machine gun and has an AoE flame pack that activates while reloading. The higher difficulty version includes shields, electric bullets, and additional adds.

The second boss, a Raven mage, teleports and casts fire-based spells while summoning flaming birds. Each boss encounter ends with a loot chest instead of enemy body drops. All loot is RNG-based, and in multiple runs, gear drops varied each time—suggesting a Diablo-like system of replayable dungeons with randomized loot.

Pioner Replay Value and MMO Outlook

The dungeon required about 40 minutes to complete with epic gear on normal difficulty. Higher difficulties promise more complexity and risk. Players can expect to find serious challenges, especially as they scale into endgame content. While no loot drops from regular mobs, boss chests and hidden “series chests” inside the dungeon offer compelling gear incentives.

From the atmospheric audio cues to the pacing of combat, Pioner captures the spirit of what an MMOFPS in 2025 could look like. Despite some UI and FOV quirks, this early look at multiplayer dungeons reveals a well-built foundation with meaningful enemy variety, group-based progression, and a blend of PvE/PvP gameplay loops that could keep players engaged for hundreds of hours.
