Atziri’s Temple is coming back to Path of Exile 2 as a permanent core mechanic in patch 0.5.0, Return of the Ancients, launching May 29, 2026. But the way it works is being overhauled from top to bottom, because the version of the Temple that ran through the Fate of the Vaal league (patch 0.4.0) caused one of the worst economy collapses the game has seen.

GGG has now confirmed the specific changes rolling out with 0.5.0, and if you built a snake temple, enjoyed low-effort divine orb floods, or simply want to know whether the Temple is worth engaging with at launch, every major change is broken down below. The full patch notes drop May 21, 2026, eight days before the league starts.
Why the Temple Wrecked 0.4.0’s Economy
The short version: the Temple generated so many divine orbs and high-value items that both lost nearly all meaning as loot.
Divine orbs, normally a premium currency, flooded the market so heavily in 0.4.0 that they became borderline worthless. And when the base currency of your economy tanks, everything priced in it either collapses or explodes in price. Iconic “drop anywhere” uniques fell to absurdly low prices. Headhunter, Original Sin, and Astramentis were all trading at around 7 to 8 divine orbs, among the cheapest they have ever been in either Path of Exile game.
At the same time, anything that was genuinely scarce hit prices no one had seen before. Lineage gems like Utrred’s Augury reached 1,300 divine orbs. Garrick’s Resolve hit 748 divine orbs. Unlü’s Embrace topped out at 663 divine orbs. Fragment costs followed. An Uber Arbitera attempt cost close to 100 divine orbs. The Trial Master’s trio of Deadly Fate, Cowardly Fate, and Victorious Fate crossed 130 divine orbs total.
Killing regular monsters felt pointless. The only place loot felt real was inside an optimized temple, which pushed players into a single content loop and killed engagement with everything else.
The Snake Strategy Explained (And Why It Is Now Dead)
The “snake temple” strategy was an optimized routing method where players chained Spymaster rooms through the temple grid in a snaking path. By carefully controlling which rooms were connected and using Destabilization Medallions at exactly the right moments, players could preserve a high number of Tier 3 rooms and maintain a temple with 60 or more crystals. Run it repeatedly and the output was enormous.
GGG has patched this out directly in 0.5.0.
Rooms that are meant to be destabilized but cannot be removed without disconnecting other parts of the temple will now be downgraded to paths instead. This applies no matter how the destabilization is triggered, whether through a device in a Tier 3 room, by opening the Vault, or through normal destabilization when closing the temple. The snake routing method relied on exploiting how disconnecting rooms interacted with destabilization rules. That interaction is gone.
If you have a snake temple migrated to standard early access leagues after Fate of the Vaal ends, it will not be destroyed on arrival. But the first time you actually run it after launch, the new rules apply. The chained rooms will break apart over subsequent runs and the temple will be pulled back in line over time.
How the Temple Works in 0.5.0
Access has changed across the campaign and endgame.
In Act 3, six Vaal Beacons appear in the world. Activating each one by clearing the monsters guarding it unlocks the Temple in the present day. The Doryani’s Contingency interlude (following Act 3) will also feature the Temple, where completing additional beacon encounters there unlocks the Temple in the past. Acts 1, 2, 4, and the other two interludes will not include the Temple at all.
Once you reach the endgame, Vaal Beacons appear in maps. A new dedicated Atlas region guarantees a Vaal Beacon encounter in every single map within it. Completing this region earns points for the new Temple Atlas passive tree.
Temple level is now tied to map area level, not character level. In Fate of the Vaal, temple power scaled with your character’s level. In 0.5.0, the level of your temple is based on the area level of maps where crystals were collected. To open a high-tier temple, you need to be running high-tier maps.
Meta Progression Is Faster Now
One change that benefits every player is that the slow grind to unlock the full crystal cap is skipped entirely.
All players now start with a crystal cap of 60 and a medallion cap of six. Previously you had to work through upgrades to reach these caps. That progression is removed from the early game, so you can start building optimized temples from much earlier in your endgame journey.
Medallion drop rates have also been rebalanced. Smaller temples now give slightly improved medallion drops to help get things started faster. But once your temple is well established and running large, drop rates are slightly reduced so it does not snowball quite as hard as it did in 0.4.0.
Tier 4 Rooms Are Coming (But You Have to Unlock Them)
One of the biggest structural additions to the Temple in 0.5.0 is the ability to upgrade rooms to Tier 4. This is not available by default. It requires unlocking the Transcendent Progress node on the new Temple Atlas passive tree.
Once unlocked, Tier 4 rooms open up a higher ceiling for what temples can output and how players specialize their layouts. GGG’s stated goal here is that players who invest deeply into the Temple should end up doing notably different things from each other, rather than everyone converging on one optimal snake path.
Vaal Infusers Now Split Into Four Items
Vaal Infusers used to be a single currency item usable on any armor or weapon. In 0.5.0, they are being split into four distinct currency items covering armors, marshal weapons, cast weapons, and jewelry.
Any existing Vaal Infusers you own will automatically convert to Val Armorer’s Infusers, which only apply to armor. The jewelry infuser is the notable new addition, since it allows players to over-quality jewelry, which slightly overlaps with one of Breach’s current strengths in that space. GGG has confirmed that Breach will receive new advantages to compensate for that overlap, so it is not losing power overall.
New Temple Atlas Passive Tree Nodes
Three notable nodes have been confirmed from the teaser:
Efficient Arteries grants 20% increased effect of room temple modifiers, but only for rooms that have four adjacent rooms. This is a niche node that rewards dense, central temple building. The 20% bonus and the limited number of rooms where it applies makes this one more of a nice-to-have than a node worth building around.
At Vault means the Vault will contain an additional reward. At minimum this includes a Vaal unique item. The second and third bonus reward options were not disclosed in the teaser and will need to be discovered in-game after launch.
Transcendent Progress unlocks Tier 4 room upgrades, as mentioned above. This is the node that most fundamentally changes the Temple’s power ceiling and is the one serious investors in this mechanic will want to target first.
What Happens to Your Fate of the Vaal Characters and Temples
The Fate of the Vaal league ends approximately 94 hours before Return of the Ancients goes live, putting the league end date around May 26, 2026 for most regions. After migration:
-
Characters are moved to their parent permanent leagues with no wipes. Solo Self-Found characters go to the permanent Solo Self-Found environment. Standard characters go to standard.
-
Existing temples migrate to standard early access leagues but cannot be run until the expansion goes live.
-
Snake temples are not wiped on migration. They will degrade naturally once you run them under the new 0.5.0 rules.
-
Expect several hours of downtime during the migration window. Checking the Path of Exile 2 subreddit for confirmation before logging back in is a good call, since large-scale migrations have had occasional issues in past leagues.
