Overwatch is preparing to introduce D.Mon on August 11, but the new hero’s animated trailer has also delivered a surprising development for one of the game’s existing Tanks. Wrecking Ball plays a major role in the attack on Busan, carrying out a destructive Junker operation that puts civilians directly in danger while Talon’s Vendetta targets MEKA Squad.
The animation provides an introduction to D.Mon and her priorities ahead of her playable debut, while simultaneously pushing Hammond’s story forward after years with relatively little development.
Wrecking Ball Returns to the Overwatch Story
Wrecking Ball, also known as Hammond, originated on the Horizon Lunar Colony alongside Winston. The genetically modified hamster possesses extraordinary intelligence and engineering skills, though his mech handles much of his communication through translated speech.
Following the uprising at Horizon, Hammond escaped the lunar facility and eventually landed in Australia. He transformed his escape pod into the combat mech players recognize today and entered the Junkertown arena, where he became a successful competitor under Junker Queen’s rule.
Despite being part of Overwatch’s playable roster for years, Hammond’s personal story had largely stalled after his time in Junkertown. D.Mon’s new trailer changes that by establishing him as an active participant in the Junkers’ latest operation.
D.Mon Faces Wrecking Ball During the Attack on Busan
The trailer sees the Junkers attacking Busan as part of their new cooperation with Vendetta and Talon.
Junker Queen assigns Hammond a particularly destructive role: create enough chaos to pull MEKA Squad away from its base. Wrecking Ball attacks civilians on a bridge and attempts to bring the structure down, giving Vendetta an opportunity to infiltrate MEKA’s facility and steal an EMP.
The situation forces D.Mon into an immediate conflict between her orders and the lives of civilians.
Rather than returning to base, she stays behind to confront Hammond and protect the people caught in the attack. The decision establishes D.Mon’s priorities before players even get the opportunity to use her in-game, portraying her as a more serious and duty-driven character than D.Va.
The trailer also offers glimpses of D.Mon’s combat style, including the use of a sword and defensive shield.
Vendetta Escapes With MEKA’s EMP
D.Mon succeeds in stopping Wrecking Ball, but the decision comes at a cost.
While MEKA Squad is occupied with the Junkers, Vendetta successfully escapes with the EMP. That theft could have significant consequences for Busan, particularly because the technology was part of MEKA’s defenses against the Gwishin threat.
D.Mon nevertheless stands by her decision to save the civilians. With Hammond defeated, she intends to use him as a source of information about the Junkers before MEKA Squad turns its attention toward Talon and the stolen EMP.
The development also pushes the broader Reign of Talon storyline forward. Vendetta now possesses an important piece of technology, while the Junkers have become directly involved in Talon’s plans.
Wrecking Ball Steals the Spotlight
Despite D.Mon being the focus of the animation, Hammond receives some of its most memorable moments.
His willingness to cause destruction is played against the inherently absurd image of a hamster piloting a heavily armed spherical mech. The trailer leans into that contrast, including moments where Hammond mutes Junker Queen and becomes visibly furious after losing his battle.
Some sequences also resemble familiar Wrecking Ball player behavior, with Hammond using aggressive flanks and disruptive tactics to keep his opponents occupied.
More importantly, the trailer gives Wrecking Ball something he has lacked for a long time: meaningful progression in the Overwatch narrative.
Hammond is no longer simply a former arena fighter associated with Junkertown. He is actively working alongside Junker Queen and participating in the Junkers’ operations, demonstrating a clear degree of loyalty to the faction.
What Happens to Hammond Next?
Wrecking Ball’s defeat leaves several unanswered questions.
D.Mon has captured him and intends to extract information, but it remains unclear whether Junker Queen will attempt to recover her ally. Hammond’s involvement could also eventually attract the attention of Winston, creating an opportunity to revisit the shared history of the two Horizon Lunar Colony survivors.
A more dramatic possibility would be Hammond eventually changing sides, though nothing in the trailer confirms that direction. Given the severity of his actions during the Busan attack, any attempt to rehabilitate him would require significant narrative development.
For now, the animation accomplishes two things at once. It establishes D.Mon as a serious new member of Overwatch’s Tank roster while bringing Wrecking Ball back into the center of the game’s evolving story. With D.Mon arriving on August 11 and Vendetta now holding MEKA’s EMP, the attack on Busan appears to be another step toward a larger confrontation involving MEKA Squad, the Junkers, and Talon.
