Nintendo Switch 2, Sony’s Canceled Games, & more : January Gaming News Roundup

2025 has started hot with some unexpected gaming news. Nintendo has officially revealed the Nintendo Switch 2, catching many by surprise. The updated console boasts a slightly larger design than its predecessor, with a flexible backstand for versatile screen angles. The sleek black Joy-Con controllers introduce a new feature allowing them to function as a computer mouse when flipped sideways.

Backward compatibility is a notable addition, enabling players to enjoy both digital and physical Nintendo Switch games on the new console. While some exceptions will apply, details on these limitations are forthcoming. Fans eagerly anticipate potential performance and graphical boosts for games like Tears of the Kingdom, reminiscent of PS4 games transitioning to the PS5.

Additionally, the first gameplay snippet for the next Mario Kart hints at significant updates. The game introduces a track with updated character designs, such as Donkey Kong, and expands the player count to 24 racers, doubling the series’ previous capacity. More details will emerge during the Nintendo Direct on April 2nd.

Sony’s Cancelled Projects: A Surprising Setback (Gaming News)

Jason Schreier has reported the cancellation of two unannounced live-service games from Sony-owned studios. Bend Studio’s project, which was said to build on the open-world systems of Days Gone, is among the casualties. Bluepoint Games’ scrapped live-service God of War title is perhaps the most shocking revelation, as fans had speculated the studio was developing an original IP.

Sony’s push toward live-service games has met with mixed success, with major franchises like Spider-Man and The Last of Us also seeing canceled live-service projects. This strategy has not only impacted existing franchises but also hindered new IP development, leaving fans and studios frustrated. Bend and Bluepoint are now exploring new project opportunities, ensuring the studios remain active despite these setbacks.

Rebel Wolves Debuts with “Blood of the Dawn Walker”

Rebel Wolves, a studio formed by former CD Projekt Red staff, has unveiled their first game, Blood of the Dawn Walker. The narrative-driven RPG explores the journey of protagonist Goen, who becomes part-vampire while battling a vampiric threat to save his family.

Gameplay systems promise depth and innovation. Day-night cycles significantly alter gameplay, with Goen relying on traditional combat during the day and tapping into vampiric powers at night. However, players must manage Goen’s blood hunger to avoid unintended consequences, such as harming quest-critical NPCs. Open-ended questing systems and a ticking clock mechanic further add to the game’s appeal. A full gameplay reveal is scheduled for summer 2025.

Ubisoft’s Future Plans and Challenges

Ubisoft’s roadmap includes an array of titles set for release between now and 2026. Notable entries include remakes of Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, as well as new Assassin’s Creed titles such as Hexe and the Black Flag remake. The latter promises significant updates, running on the Anvil engine with improved systems and combat mechanics.

However, Ubisoft’s challenges persist. Reports suggest the company may collaborate with Tencent to establish a new publishing studio, potentially shifting key IPs like Rayman and Splinter Cell to a new entity. While this move could stabilize Ubisoft’s financial situation, it underscores the company’s ongoing struggles.

Upcoming releases, including Far Cry 7 and Ghost Recon, offer potential highlights. However, projects like the multiplayer-focused Far Cry Maverick have raised concerns, given Ubisoft’s history with underperforming titles. Fans hope the delayed Assassin’s Creed Shadows, now set for March 20, will deliver a polished experience.
