Nintendo Switch 2 Faces Shortages Despite Record Sales

Nintendo has officially confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold over six million units globally within seven weeks of launch. According to the company’s financial meeting held on August 1st, the platform moved 3.5 million units during its launch weekend alone. Nintendo did not disclose the exact total beyond “more than six million,” but noted that demand continues to outpace supply in several regions.

In June alone, Switch 2 sold 5.82 million units, outselling the entire holiday quarter of fiscal year 2025 for the original Switch. When extrapolated, sales averaged nearly 500,000 units weekly—indicating a strong and steady momentum. Despite online speculation suggesting the console’s sales were stagnating, retail data from Japan confirms that July’s performance remained healthy, even if exact global numbers are not yet public.

Zelda’s Age of Imprisonment Likely Targets November Release

A major clue surfaced via Nintendo Australia suggesting Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment could launch in November 2025. The trailer’s YouTube description states the game “launches on Nintendo Switch 2 this spring.” As Australia’s spring runs from September to November, this aligns with Nintendo of America’s prior claim of a “winter” launch.

Nintendo has a history of using “winter” to refer to November releases—as seen with Pokémon Mystery Dungeon in the past. This strategic phrasing supports theories that Age of Imprisonment may serve as the company’s flagship holiday release, bridging seasonal terminology across hemispheres. The game continues to be labeled as canonical within the Zelda timeline, with direct ties to Tears of the Kingdom.

Mortal Kombat Legacy Collection Gets Full Physical Release

For physical collectors, Mortal Kombat Legacy Collection will release with a full cartridge edition on both Switch and Switch 2. The version will not use a download key and is scheduled to ship on December 12, 2025. Published by Limited Run Games, the Collector’s Edition features a Goro controller holder, a hardcover art book, and commemorative arcade tokens priced at $149.99.

This release offers a rare physical edition in a digital-heavy era, especially as Nintendo’s recent Direct announced many titles as key card-only. Collectors view the full physical inclusion as a positive shift.

Nintendo Announces Price Hike for OLED and Accessories

Despite strong sales performance, Nintendo revealed that prices for the original Switch family and certain Switch 2 accessories will increase starting August 3rd. The update affects the Switch OLED, Switch Lite, and their corresponding accessories. Some Amiibo and the Nintendo Sound Clock Alarmal will also see changes. Prices for Switch 2 consoles and software remain unaffected for now, but Nintendo warns that future adjustments are possible.

The official reason cited is “market conditions,” though no specific figures were provided. This development follows earlier price increases in Canada and comes amid speculation about global supply chain adjustments and international tariffs. As of now, the Nintendo eShop still lists older models at standard pricing, with adjustments expected to reflect shortly.

Nintendo continues to push forward with strong momentum despite concerns about hardware pricing. The Switch 2’s early performance has already surpassed expectations and solidified its place in the next-gen market. Fans await clarification on accessory costs, but confidence remains high in the platform’s trajectory. With major releases like Age of Imprisonment and Mario Kart World on the horizon, Nintendo appears ready to dominate the holiday season
