New Silksong Gameplay Trailer Highlights Far Fields and Cogworks

Hollow Knight: Silksong fans finally have tangible confirmation of the long-awaited 2025 release. At the Xbox Showcase during Summer Games Fest 2025, Microsoft unveiled the ROG Xbox Ally X—a handheld Xbox system set to arrive later this year. Silksong will be playable at launch on the new device, locking in the title for a 2025 release window. Developer confirmation also came from Leth, who stated Team Cherry is aiming to release Silksong before Christmas.

While the same window had already been mentioned during the Switch 2 Direct, it’s reassuring to see Microsoft echoing that timeline. A short gameplay trailer gave fans an updated look at new environments, traversal, enemies, and tools Hornet will wield on her journey through Pharloom. Though much of the footage was edited with animation overlays, YouTuber Min managed to stabilize and recut the full sequence chronologically.

New Gameplay Shows Far Fields, Cogworks, and “Moist Moss Room”

Three gameplay segments were shown. First up: the Far Fields, an overgrown region filled with hunter ants and unfamiliar quadrupedal bugs. Hornet lands in an area covered in red spikes—likely a new thorn hazard—and battles new enemy types while navigating tall grass. One interaction showed an enemy attacking another, hinting that cross-damage between foes may now exist.

In the second clip, Hornet ascends the Cogworks, a vertical platforming area filled with hazards like rotating cogs and spikes. Using her Harpoon Dash, wall jumps, and a ledge-grab move, Hornet makes it through with ease. She also performs a sleek wall-run, suggesting it’s designed to complement her grab mechanic. Background elements—including pip-lined cylinders—suggest this area could be a massive mechanical music box.

The third clip takes place in a moss-covered, fly-infested room unofficially dubbed the “moist stinky moss room.” Hornet faces low-tier enemies with primitive attacks like dart-spitting and stake-throwing. The standout detail: writhing maggot-like creatures float on water under the stage, and environmental shells hint at a past storage function.

Updated HUD Icons and Passive Silk Recovery

A few new HUD elements were spotted. One yellow tool icon resembling a baked bean ring suggests a passive upgrade, likely tied to Silk mechanics. Hornet also passively regenerates a single notch of silk when empty—possibly due to a late-game tool or ability, enabling consistent Harpoon Dash usage.

Another green vine-like icon with white petals showed up later in the moss zone. These flowers have been repeatedly highlighted in trailers and seem significant to the storyline. Their gameplay impact remains unknown.

Hornet Sprite Sheet Confirms Upgrades and Abilities

Beyond the trailer, fans got a rare peek into development assets. Team Cherry shared a sprite sheet with the Australian Centre for Moving Image, later passed to IGN in early May. Containing over 400 Hornet sprites, the sheet showcases never-before-seen animations—including a cloak parachute, electric-charged dash, and midair falling dives.

Some sprites show Hornet with wings, suggesting a Monarch Wings-style upgrade. Another shows her wrapped in tentacles, likely by a boss or enemy in areas like Greymoor. There’s also evidence of tool-based interaction—such as clashing rings that may function like keys or instruments to open doors.

Hornet’s needle strumming appears in multiple forms—both seated and upright—implying this mechanic may be a core feature. Since the game’s called Silksong, musical mechanics woven into the narrative wouldn’t be surprising.

Release Speculation Grows Ahead of ACMI Exhibit

Silksong will be featured in the Game Worlds exhibit at ACMI starting September 18, with a playable build on-site. Whether that’s a near-final release candidate or the full retail version is still unclear. Leth noted that the E3 2019 demo is outdated, further fueling speculation that this could mark a pre-release showcase.

Between the Ally X news, HUD reveals, and new sprite mechanics, Hollow Knight: Silksong appears closer than ever. With only months until the ACMI exhibit and repeated confirmations from multiple sources, 2025 is shaping up to finally be the year of Silksong.
