Mimic Dust in Mistfall Hunter might look like a novelty item at first, but it can be an incredibly useful tactical tool in the right hands. Using it transforms your Gyldhunter into an ordinary environmental prop, allowing you to hide from monsters, avoid other players, or prepare an unexpected PvP ambush.
Its usefulness becomes particularly apparent when you’re outnumbered. A solo player stranded in Brandrgarde against several trios can use Mimic Dust to disappear until the area is safe, potentially buying enough time to find a Soul of Return and continue toward extraction.
There are a few important limitations, however. Here’s how to get Mimic Dust, how the transformation works, and the best ways to use it.
How to Get Mimic Dust in Mistfall Hunter
There are several ways to obtain Mimic Dust.
Buy It From Cazarro
Mimic Dust becomes available from Cazarro’s Shop after upgrading it to Level 3. Once unlocked, you can purchase the tactical item using Gyldenblod.
This is one of the most reliable options if you regularly use Mimic Dust and want a consistent supply.
Buy It From the Auction House
Other players can list Mimic Dust on the Auction House.
This provides an alternative if you haven’t upgraded Cazarro’s Shop yet, but prices can be considerably higher. If you’re planning to use Mimic Dust regularly, unlocking it directly through Cazarro is generally the more economical long-term solution.
Get It From Combat Bags
Mimic Dust can also appear among the Tactical Items provided by Combat Bags.
Since these bags provide free equipment, they’re an excellent way to build up a supply without spending additional resources. Bound Mimic Dust can be stored in your Warehouse until you need it for a future run.
How to Use Mimic Dust
Place Mimic Dust into one of your Tactical Item slots before entering combat.
These are the square equipment slots used by Tactical Items such as:
- Mimic Dust
- Spellbound Keys
- Silence Dust
- Concussive Bulbs
The item can then be activated through its assigned keybinding.
Using Mimic Dust immediately transforms your character into a random environmental object. Possible disguises include barrels, crates, fences, wheels, jars, jugs, urns, and other props commonly found throughout the map.
You don’t normally get to choose which object you become.
While transformed, you can move slowly without immediately breaking the disguise. Most other actions will end the transformation.
Attacking, interacting with objects such as doors, or taking damage will reveal you and return your character to normal.
Sorcerers can also counter the disguise with Eye of Insight, so Mimic Dust shouldn’t be treated as guaranteed invisibility against experienced players.
How to Get a Better Mimic Dust Disguise
Becoming a giant or obviously misplaced prop can ruin your hiding spot immediately. Fortunately, there is a trick that can improve your odds of getting a smaller, less noticeable disguise.
Before activating Mimic Dust:
- Look at the environmental props around you.
- Break some of the larger or less useful objects.
- Leave smaller props intact.
- Crouch.
- Activate Mimic Dust.
Doing this can reduce the pool of nearby objects that the transformation can select from, improving your chances of becoming something small and inconspicuous.
The disguise still isn’t completely under your control, but preparing the environment can make Mimic Dust significantly more reliable.
Best Ways to Use Mimic Dust
Mimic Dust has three particularly strong applications: ambushing other players, escaping PvP, and avoiding PvP altogether.
Each requires a slightly different approach.
Use Mimic Dust to Set Up PvP Ambushes
One of the funniest—and potentially deadliest—ways to use Mimic Dust is setting up an ambush.
This works especially well with a coordinated trio.
The biggest mistake is having the entire team transform and sit together in a suspicious corner. Three mismatched barrels and jars clustered beside a doorway are likely to attract attention rather than avoid it.
An experienced team may immediately blast the area with something like a Thunderstorm Sigil, Meteor Impact, or Frostblight Bomb.
Instead, spread out and make your disguises look like part of the environment.
Use High Ground
Scaffolding and other elevated structures are particularly effective ambush positions.
Many POIs contain ladders leading to wooden platforms. Transforming while positioned on one of these structures can make you appear to be another crate, cart, or piece of scenery.
Players entering an area will often search for signs that another team is nearby, including:
- Dead monsters
- Opened chests
- Broken environmental objects
- Combat sounds
- Visible players on high ground
What they’re less likely to immediately react to is an ordinary-looking crate sitting on a scaffold.
This gives ranged characters such as Blackarrows an opportunity to begin a fight from an advantageous position. A well-placed Paralysis Arrow, for example, can give the rest of your team time to attack before the opposing squad understands what’s happening.
Spread Your Team Around the Choke Point
Don’t have all three players hide in the same place.
One player can disguise themselves above the enemy’s expected route, another near a doorway, and the third on the opposite side of the area.
Once enemies enter the center of the trap, your team can attack from several directions at once.
Mimic Dust is much harder to identify when the disguised players naturally blend into different parts of the environment.
Use Mimic Dust to Escape PvP
Mimic Dust can also save a run when a fight turns against you.
Maybe the enemy has better equipment. Maybe you’re outnumbered. Or perhaps you simply lost the opening exchange and need to disengage before the opposing team finishes you.
The key is to break line of sight before using Mimic Dust.
Don’t transform directly in front of the player chasing you. They’ll know exactly which barrel they’re supposed to attack.
Instead:
- Create distance from your pursuer.
- Break their line of sight.
- Turn around a corner or drop to another level.
- Move toward believable environmental clutter.
- Activate Mimic Dust.
- Remain still while the enemy searches the area.
Movement abilities such as Sneak, Phantom Step, Shadow Veil, and Shadow Step can help create the initial separation.
Shadow Dust can also provide invisibility regardless of your class, making it another useful tool for disengaging.
The difference is that Mimic Dust can allow you to remain hidden once your pursuer arrives.
Unless the enemy has an appropriate detection tool or guesses which object you became, they may assume you continued running and move elsewhere.
Use Mimic Dust to Avoid PvP Entirely
Not every encounter needs to become a fight.
If your goal is completing quests, gathering resources, or extracting valuable loot, fighting another team may introduce unnecessary risk.
Mimic Dust is excellent for players who prefer avoiding PvP whenever possible.
If you hear footsteps, abilities, combat, or other signs that Gyldhunters are approaching, find a believable hiding spot before they see you. Activate Mimic Dust and allow the opposing players to pass.
Once you’re confident the area is clear, cancel the disguise and continue along your farming route.
This can be especially valuable when carrying expensive loot that isn’t worth risking in an unnecessary battle.
Use Mimic Dust to Avoid Monsters
Mimic Dust isn’t useful only against other Gyldhunters.
Monsters will ignore you while you’re successfully disguised, making the item an emergency option when PvE enemies are creating problems.
This becomes particularly useful when you’re caught between monsters and hostile players. Instead of fighting both sides simultaneously, breaking contact and transforming can allow the situation to resolve without you.
You can also use the breathing room to wait for enemies to leave an area before continuing toward your objective.
Mimic Dust Can Help Save a Bad Run
Some Mistfall Hunter runs reach a point where direct combat simply isn’t the best option.
If you’re isolated, surrounded by stronger teams, or running out of opportunities to extract, Mimic Dust can buy valuable time. This is particularly useful when trying to survive long enough to acquire a Soul of Return after becoming stranded in a dangerous section of Brandrgarde.
The item isn’t guaranteed to save you. A player who sees you transform, uses Eye of Insight, attacks suspicious props, or simply guesses correctly can expose the disguise.
But when your alternative is taking an unfavorable fight, Mimic Dust gives you another option.
Is Mimic Dust Worth Carrying?
Mimic Dust is absolutely worth considering for one of your Tactical Item slots, particularly when playing solo or entering areas with heavy PvP activity.
It can help you escape losing fights, avoid unnecessary encounters, hide from monsters, and set up surprisingly effective ambushes. Coordinated trios can get even more value from it by disguising themselves across multiple positions before attacking an unsuspecting team.
Just remember the most important rule: your disguise needs to make sense.
A lone crate on a scaffold probably won’t attract much attention. Three suspicious barrels sitting together in the middle of an otherwise empty hallway probably will.
Use the environment intelligently, break line of sight before transforming, and Mimic Dust can become one of the most useful tactical items in Mistfall Hunter.
