Marvel Rivals Season 9 Buffs and Nerfs Explained

Marvel Rivals Season 9: The Mystery of Thebes introduces one of the game’s largest balance updates to date. Alongside the new Regenerative Shields mechanic and a complete overhaul of the Team-Up system, nearly every Vanguard, Duelist, and Strategist has received adjustments.

The update aims to reduce reliance on older Team-Up combinations while encouraging greater hero variety. As a result, several underperforming characters have received meaningful buffs, while many of the strongest heroes from previous seasons have been toned down.

  • Removal of most Team-Up Anchor bonuses.
  • A complete rework of Black Widow.

Biggest Buffs

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange is one of the biggest winners of the update. His base Health has increased to 650, while Shield of the Seraphim now provides 850 shield health. Combined with defensive support from Invisible Woman, his barrier can absorb an enormous amount of damage, making him one of the strongest frontline tanks in Season 9.

Devil Dinosaur

Devil Dinosaur received a substantial durability boost with an additional 100 Health and improvements to his passive ability. These changes make him significantly harder to eliminate during extended fights.

Thor

Thor benefits from improvements to Hammer Throw, Storm Surge, and his Bonus Health, giving him greater mobility and survivability while maintaining strong offensive pressure.

Marvel Rivals Season 9 Nerfs

Peni Parker Lost Team-Up Health bonus
White Fox Spirit Sanctuary cooldown increased from 12 to 15 seconds
Rocket Raccoon Ultimate Energy cost increased from 4,000 to 4,300

Biggest Nerfs

Cyclops

Cyclops received some of the harshest reductions in the patch. His Optic Blast damage drops from 25 to 21, while several mobility abilities now have 15-second cooldowns, reducing both his burst potential and flexibility.

Iron Man

After dominating previous seasons, Iron Man has been toned down with damage reductions across several of his primary attacks, including Repulsor Blast and Unibeam.

Rogue

Rogue loses some of her defensive strength and burst damage, making her less oppressive during close-range engagements and easier to punish when committing to fights.

Rocket Raccoon

Rocket Raccoon’s Ultimate now requires more Energy to activate and deals less effective damage at longer ranges, reducing its impact during team fights.

How Season 9 Changes the Meta

Season 9 shifts the game toward longer, more methodical team fights.

The introduction of Regenerative Shields gives Vanguard heroes more staying power, allowing them to recover between engagements without relying entirely on healers. Meanwhile, removing many of the previous Team-Up bonuses reduces the number of mandatory hero pairings, opening the door for more diverse team compositions.

Overall, the balance update rewards sustained frontline pressure, stronger healing, and flexible team building while reducing the dominance of several heroes that defined earlier metas.
