A fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 on PC has been canceled shortly before its planned September 2026 release. The Speclizer mod team says it received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting that the unofficial project not be released.
Development had been underway since January 2026, with the team showing substantial gameplay footage over the summer. Despite reaching an advanced stage, the multiplayer mod will now remain unreleased.
Sony Asked Speclizer Not to Release the Mod
According to Speclizer, the request came from Sony Interactive Entertainment on behalf of Naughty Dog and PlayStation.
The team subsequently confirmed that it would comply and cancel the planned September launch.
The project was never an official Naughty Dog or PlayStation release. Instead, it was being developed specifically as an unofficial modification for the PC version of The Last of Us Part 2.
Speclizer had spent several months developing the project before receiving Sony’s request.
What Was in The Last of Us Part 2 Multiplayer Mod?
The scope went considerably beyond simply allowing multiple players to enter the existing single-player game.
Speclizer created custom systems specifically for competitive multiplayer, including dedicated maps, character perks, custom loadouts, and matchmaking for team-based matches.
The project also featured a modified version of The Last of Us’ listening mechanic adapted for multiplayer.
Gameplay footage released during development demonstrated how far the project had progressed, including a roughly 25-minute showcase of multiplayer matches and its custom mechanics.
Some of the development was supported by fans through Patreon as the team worked toward the planned release.
None of that work will now receive a public launch following Sony’s intervention.
The Last of Us Part 2 Never Got Official Multiplayer
The cancellation is particularly notable because The Last of Us Part 2 itself never received the multiplayer component that Naughty Dog originally considered during development.
In September 2019, Naughty Dog confirmed that The Last of Us Part 2 would launch without multiplayer.
The studio instead focused its resources on the single-player campaign, which it described at the time as its largest project to date.
The Last of Us Part 2 subsequently launched in 2020 entirely as a single-player experience.
However, Naughty Dog made it clear that its multiplayer ambitions for the franchise weren’t over.
Naughty Dog Later Canceled The Last of Us Online
Rather than attaching multiplayer to Part 2, Naughty Dog began developing a separate multiplayer project set in The Last of Us universe.
That game eventually became known publicly as The Last of Us Online.
The standalone project grew considerably during development, but Naughty Dog ultimately canceled it in 2023.
The studio explained that continuing with the game would have required committing substantial resources to post-launch content and support, potentially changing the direction of Naughty Dog from a studio primarily focused on single-player games.
Its cancellation left The Last of Us without a modern successor to the multiplayer experience originally offered through Factions in the first game.
The Speclizer Mod Will Remain Unreleased
Speclizer’s project represented an unofficial alternative for PC players who still wanted competitive multiplayer built around The Last of Us Part 2’s gameplay systems.
With custom matchmaking, maps, perks, loadouts, and other multiplayer-specific mechanics already demonstrated, the mod had progressed far beyond an early proof of concept before development was stopped.
Its planned September 2026 launch is now canceled, and the team has indicated that it will respect Sony’s request not to distribute the project.
That leaves The Last of Us Part 2 without either an official or fan-released multiplayer mode, despite separate attempts by Naughty Dog and the modding community to expand the game and its universe beyond single-player.
