Is Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 Good? | GAME REVIEW

User Rating: 7.5

The arrival of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 was one of the most hotly anticipated game releases of the year. But does this cinematic action-adventure live up to the incredible heights of its cult classic predecessor? Prepare yourselves for an adventure as we expose the secrets behind this sequel and find out if it is the greatest game of all time! Let’s dive into my Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 game review.

A Warrior’s New Quest

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 released on May 21st, 2024 for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and cloud streaming via GeForce Now. Hellblade 2 picks up shortly after the events of Senua’s Sacrifice. Our tormented heroine Senua is still grappling with her psychosis and the death of her lover. It fueled her quest for vengeance against the Vikings who ruined her village.

Like the first game, Hellblade 2 continues exploring heavy themes surrounding Senua’s mental illness, with her inner voices and hallucinations once again taking center stage. It also touches on topics of grief, Norse mythology, and the overwhelming personal obstacles she must overcome.

Gameplay

From a gameplay perspective, Hellblade 2 is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, the incredible graphics, sound design, and cinematic production values are absolutely best-in-class. The visual fidelity is jaw-dropping, with hyper-realistic character models and awe-inspiring environmental details. The binaural 3D audio brilliantly immerses you, with Senua’s haunting inner voices whispering chillingly close.

However, the core gameplay systems underwhelm compared to the movie-quality presentation. Combat has been stripped down to an overly simplistic system of priming parries and striking single opponents in brief, scripted bouts lacking depth. While visceral, it grows repetitive quickly.

The environmental puzzles also fail to bring anything new to the table. These perspective-based solutions return from the first game, challenging you to align symbols or manipulate light to reshape your surroundings. They provide a welcome break from the main action but never become frustratingly difficult.

Disappointingly, the narrative also stumbles in capturing the profound sense of storytelling, introspection, and deeper meanings that made the original journey so special. While it continues charting Senua’s struggles with psychosis, the writing around her inner voices feels less poetic and impactful. The broader plot points also failed to resonate.

The Verdict

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is a true technical marvel that will blow you away with its cinematic production values and incredible graphics/audio design. However, as an actual gameplay experience, its repetitive combat, simple puzzles, and lack of narrative depth disappoint compared to the original’s impact.

It’s a must-play for cinematic and technical enthusiasts, but those craving more dynamic gameplay systems and deeper storytelling may walk away underwhelmed by this gorgeous but shallow experience. What are you waiting for after reading this Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 game review? If you’re looking for a visually stunning and immersive experience, this game could be for you.
