Is Riot Pricing Their Skin Bundles Too High? – Faker League of Legends $500 Skin Review

Riot has released the best skins in the game for years. Whether it’s Valorant or League of Legends, Riot’s design team always excels in skin designs. The real question amid this skin hype is whether the prices are justified. Riot recently announced their collaboration with League of Legends GOAT Faker by inducting him into the Hall of Legends. Faker is the first person to enter this elite list, and Riot is releasing a Hall of Fame skin bundle as a tribute to Faker.

Faker’s Hall of Legends Bundle Details

  • Risen Legend Collection: This bundle includes the Hall of Legends event pass, a border icon, an emote, and the basic Risen Ahri skin with a unique takedown taunt, priced at 5,430 RP.
  • Immortalized Legend Collection: Apart from the items in the Risen Legend Collection, this tier offers holographic splash art, a dynamic loading screen background, champion finisher effects, a custom visual announcer, and skin transformations. These skins also feature three Demon King forms and a recall animation featuring Faker’s four World trophies, costing 32,430 RP.
  • Signature Immortalized Legend Collection: This top tier includes everything from the previous tiers. It also includes Faker’s signature on various elements and all SKT T1 skins from Faker’s past World titles, priced at a whopping 9,260 RP, equivalent to about $500 USD.

Riot has been under fire for the pricing this past week. While many agree with Riot’s move to introduce a “Hall of Legends” concept, the pricing has been absurd. Critics have complained that Riot is milking Faker’s success by introducing skins with such high prices. Even many successful streamers have labeled this new price range for elite skins as over the top. The only rationale from Riot’s side would be to make this skin one of the rarest skins ever.

The Memes Have Started to Pour In

The internet, as usual, trolled the price of this skin, and no one held back. Many streamers joked that with a price of $500, Faker himself should personally come and coach the skin owners. Others quickly compared it to real-life items, pointing out that $500 would buy them a bottle of soju for two months straight. The trolls against Riot kept pouring in as more people learned about the skin’s pricing.

Valorant skins are some of the priciest skins among competitive shooter titles. Compared to the Faker skin price, Valorant’s top-priced bundle is only one-fifth of what the new League of Legends skin costs. Since it’s Riot, players can expect similar “Hall of Fame” items in Valorant at some point as well.

The Real Reason Behind Riot’s High-Priced Skins

Unlike Counter-Strike, Apex Legends, and many other games, Riot does not deal with the “crate” meta. In the mentioned games, players can open crates with in-game currency to unlock skins. The skin rewarded from each crate is random, which means unlocking a specific skin requires opening multiple crates. This system forces players to stock up on in-game currency and keep opening multiple crates. In Counter-Strike, many renowned streamers end up spending upwards of $10,000 trying to unlock a rare melee skin and sometimes don’t even get it.

In Riot’s store, there are no crates as of now. This means players get exactly what they want at a fixed price, which in the long run costs less than opening multiple crates. Hence, to feature really rare and unique skins in the game, Riot might have to release these skins at exorbitant rates. Clearly, this is what they intend to do with the Hall of Legends Faker skin.
