Is Final Fantasy XVI Worth Buying? | GAME REVIEW

User Rating: 8.5

The Final Fantasy series has always been one of the firsts in the RPG genre and expectations were rocketing with the release. This instalment differs from the traditional turn-based combat and JRPG style that the franchise is known for. FF16 gives off a more action-focused gameplay, a darker, complicated plot. Is the game worth it? Here is a review to help you decide.

Is Final Fantasy XVI Worth Buying?

Final Fantasy is a long running RPG by Square Enix. The games focus on a plot of fantasy settings, where players control Clive Rosfield. Clive is someone who fights, explores, and goes through the story of Final Fantasy. In earlier games, the series is known for its turn-based combat. Just recently though, for its action-heavy gameplay.

A Shift to Real-Time Action

Is Final Fantasy XVI Worth Buying? | GAME REVIEWOne of the most significant changes in FF16 is its combat system. Unlike previous FF games that leaned into Active Time Battle mechanics, FF16 introduces full real-time combat. For fans of Devil May Cry or Dark Souls, this shift will feel a lot familiar. Players control the protagonist, Clive Rosfield, in intense one-on-one battles, and large-scale Eikon fights.

On the other hand, traditional JRPG fans may find this conflicting. If you were hoping for the slower, strategic pace of older Final Fantasy, this new approach might not scratch that itch. But if you love fast action, you’ll likely find it responsive.

Story and Characters

Is Final Fantasy XVI Worth Buying GAME REVIEWFF16 offers a more matured story compared to its previous instalments. The game is set in a war-torn world while the story focuses on politics, revenge, and the personal growth of Clive. The character development is a standout feature, especially with Clive’s evolution from an avenging warrior to a more nuanced hero. The supporting characters, including Jill, Cid, and the Eikons, are well-written and add depth to the overall experience.

What Might Hold You Back

While FF16 offers a lot to love, it’s not without its drawbacks. The shift to real-time combat might separate long-time fans of the franchise who prefer a more traditional RPG experience. Additionally, while the story’s characters are well-developed, some may find it too dark or overly complicated for their taste.

The game also has more linear design compared to previous open-world entries, which could limit replayability for those who enjoy exploration. Another potential downside is the pacing. Some players have noted that the game’s middle section can drag, with extended dialogue sequences or repetitive side quests that divert from the main narrative.

Version 1.02 Update

Is Final Fantasy XVI Worth Buying GAME REVIEWAn updated file for the Final Fantasy XVI PC demo has been released on Steam and the Epic Games Store. The update improves gameplay stability by fixing stuttering problems. Also, it resolves issues with certain characters not displaying correctly. It applies user adjustments for “Screen Space Reflection” and “Variable Rate Shading” settings.

The patch also fixes a problem with settings not being saved on certain hardware environments. These fixes will be incorporated into both the full release version and the demo, September 10, 2024.

Final Fantasy XVI Review: Is it worthy?

Final Fantasy XVI is a different path for the series, with its changes in combat, story, and visuals. It’s a perfect game for players who enjoy RPGs with an action focused plot. However, long-time fans of the series who prefer the traditional JRPG mechanics and open-world exploration may feel less enthusiastic.

If you’re someone who likes world-building, and boss battles, FF16 will surely be worth your time and money. But if you’re hesitant about the departure from the classic Final Fantasy formula, it may be worth waiting for a sale or playing a demo to see if the new additions aligns with your expectations.
