Is Escape From Duckov Good? | GAME REVIEW

Summary

    • Winning interest with adorable duck characters and jazzy soundtrack, creating a delightful atmosphere unique from typical extraction shooters.
    • Requires excessive grinding and repetitive quest design despite the responsive combat and weapon customization.
    • Has slow progression and an uninspired task system which makes the 60-80 hour story feel unnecessarily stretched.

Waddling into the gaming scene is the 2025 indie title, Escape From Duckov. Team Soda delivered a transformation of hardcore extraction shooter genre into a cartoonish duck-filled adventure. But will this quirky concept translate to a must-try game? Now, delve into the gameplay of Escape From Duckov with this game review!

A Fresh Take on Extraction Shooters

Reimagines the extraction shooter formula you’ve seen from Escape From Tarkov. Instead of gritty military operations, you’ll take control of customizable duck characters against hostile waterfowl and dangerous wildlife. So, you still experience the core loop of looting, extracting, and upgrading which is popular within the genre.

But what makes it different is its lighthearted approach that makes it accessible to anyone. Moreover, the top-down, isometric perspective allows you to see your movements and creates genuine tension during flanking.

Meanwhile, it has impressive weapon feedback that rivals many first-person shooters out there. Due to this, the shooting mechanics remain satisfying despite the cartoonish visual.

Every Duck Is Unique

Escape From Duckov particularly shines due to its art direction and sound design. It keeps the roundness of your real ducks while offering diverse designs through its character creator. Each duck was made recognizable by making the quacks and movement sounds unique.

Besides, the attention to detail extends to different enemy classes, creating variety among ducks. Then, expect a relaxing atmosphere in your hideout with the jazzy soundtrack played against rising raid tension. On the other hand, it has expansive weapon customizations perfect for gun enthusiasts

The Grind Problem

However, the biggest weakness of Escape From Duckov is its requirement of excessive grinding. You’ll get tired of the gameplay after several dozen extractions as it forces you to repeat the same routes. Meanwhile, the single-player design removes unpredictability and social elements which you experienced from multiplayer extraction shooters.

It has similar quest design with Tarkov, featuring fetch quests and absurd requirements. This includes shooting enemies in specific body parts and exact distances. Also, the tasks unnecessary stretches out the adventure for main story completion.

The progression system also faces issues as it requires you to pay to access larger and more challenging maps. Hence, dying will have you paying again just to return to the map. It uses a random number generation, determining whether you’ll find crucial quest items. But it also introduces events like elite robot squads and storms for challenge.

Missing the Mark on Atmosphere

Although Duckov successfully captured Tarkov’s gameplay mechanics, it largely differs in atmosphere and storytelling. Though the maps are spacious, it feels empty between points of interest. It barely gives you reason to explore beyond funneled paths and corridors, lacking the rich world-building.

Also, the death penalty system reduced tension significantly as it allows you to recover gear by looting your corpse. This removes the stakes and drama which you’ve seen from extraction shooters. More so, the core gameplay loop feels repetitive because of its absence of multiplayer gameplay.

The Verdict

Summing up this review, Escape From Duckov offers you a creative and charming take on the extraction shooter gameplay. It has impressive art and sound design that adds intrigue to its duck characters. However, the task and progression system requires intensive grinding without bringing something new into the table. This is definitely a game to play for anyone wanting to experience fresh extraction shooter gameplay.
