Good news for Valorant players: you won’t get demoted easily anymore! Riot Games has introduced a major change to Valorant’s competitive system with Patch 10.01. The big news is that they will launch a new derank protection Valorant mechanic called Ranked Shields.
For players who find it too frustrating when they’re back-and-forth winning and losing in ranked matches, this may be a big sigh of relief. Players will be able to maintain their competitive ranks longer and have a safety net against immediate demotions.
What Are Ranked Shields?

The new derank protection Valorant feature called Ranked Shields are items that players receive whenever they reach Tier 1 of any rank. There will always be two shields given by this feature. Ranked Shields act as extra chances when you’re at risk of dropping to a lower rank. For example, if you reach Gold 1 from Silver 3, you’ll receive two Ranked Shields to help protect your new rank.
How The System Works

The derank protection Valorant mechanic is actually pretty straightforward. But, it still comes with specific rules that players should know.
When you’re at 0 RR (Rank Rating) in Tier 1 of any rank and lose a match, you’ll use one Ranked Shield instead of getting demoted. Losing another game while still at 0 RR will consume your second shield. You basically have two extra chances to protect you from demotion. Only when you lose for the third time at 0 RR with no shields remaining will you drop to your previous rank.
For instance, if you’re in Platinum 1 with 0 RR:
- First loss: Uses first shield
- Second loss: Uses second shield
- Third loss: Demotes you to Gold 3
The new derank protection Valorant system is set so that Ranked Shields only work in Tier 1 of each rank (like Silver 1, Gold 1, Platinum 1). You don’t get shields in Tier 2 or 3 of any rank and shields don’t recharge until you reach Tier 1 of a new rank.
The system applies to all ranks except Radiant, and winning at 0 RR doesn’t restore used shields. Additionally, if you rank up from Tier 1 to Tier 2 and then repeatedly lose down to Tier 1 again with 0 RR, you’ll be demoted after your next defeat.
Using and Tracking Your Ranked Shields

Players should use their shields wisely. If you’re having a rough day and lose your first shield, consider taking a break before risking your second one. There can always be slumps, and knowing when you’re in one might help prevent lose streaks and wasting shields.
Riot has also made it easy to monitor your shield status. You can see it through the Rank Details screen in the game client. It will show you how many shields you have remaining and explain how the system works.
Benefits of the New Derank Protection in Valorant

- Provides a buffer against bad games or unlucky streaks
- Gives players more chances to prove they belong in their current rank
- Reduces ranked anxiety by offering protection against immediate demotions
- Creates a more forgiving environment for players adapting to a new rank
Conclusion

This new derank protection system changes how Valorant handles competitive progression. Players may now be able to experience a more balanced and fair ranking system that is still challenging. The community showed support for this feature, of course, as they can now enjoy their ranked matches without too much fear of lose streaks ruining their efforts. With the new Ranked Shields, you can go all out in competitive gameplay knowing that you have not just one, but two safety nets.
