Helldivers 2 has joined the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog at the same time as Arrowhead launches its major Devoid of Liberty update. PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members can now access the co-op shooter through their subscription, while existing players on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC get a new chapter of the Galactic War built around the mysterious Illuminate Void.
Devoid of Liberty introduces mutated enemies, new mission objectives, additional extraction options, expanded progression and greater support from SEAF troops. Sony is also using the update to launch new community challenges and physical rewards tied to in-game achievements.
Helldivers 2 Is Now Part of PlayStation Plus
Starting August 12, Helldivers 2 is available through the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog.
The addition applies to the Extra and Premium tiers, meaning eligible PS5 subscribers no longer need to purchase the base game separately.
PlayStation Essential subscribers do not receive Game Catalog access.

Sony says Helldivers 2 had reached more than 22.9 million players across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC as of August 9, 2026, making its PlayStation Plus arrival another potentially significant boost to an already large player base.
Devoid of Liberty Takes the War Toward the Void
The bigger development for existing players is Devoid of Liberty.
Arrowhead is moving the Galactic War toward the strange region known as the Void, an area connected to the Illuminate and increasingly affecting nearby planets.
Planets within its influence have been permanently changed by mutations, with Arrowhead warning that the effects become more severe the closer players move toward the Void itself.
The update effectively creates a darker new front for Helldivers 2 rather than simply adding another set of standard missions.
Sony describes Devoid of Liberty as the beginning of a new horror-themed narrative arc, with the Void gradually transforming environments and familiar enemies as the story develops.
New Missions Focus on the Illuminate
Players heading toward the Void receive several new objectives.
Squads may be tasked with destroying Illuminate spires and gateways, gathering reconnaissance data or infiltrating Illuminate structures.
Additional secondary objectives include clearing Void mutations and extracting materials for research.
One of the more useful additions is the possibility of opening a secondary extraction zone during some missions.
That could have a major tactical impact, particularly on harder difficulties where reaching the normal extraction point can turn into one of the most dangerous moments of an operation.
Instead of always fighting back through the same area, squads may be able to create a faster escape route depending on how the mission develops.
The Wretch and Crusher Join the Enemy Roster
The Void has also produced new mutated creatures.
Arrowhead has highlighted two in particular.
The Wretch
The Wretch is designed around speed.
It can quickly close the distance to players, overwhelm isolated Helldivers and evade counter-attacks.
The enemy appears built to punish teams that lose formation or allow smaller creatures to get too close.
The Crusher
The Crusher sits at the other end of the spectrum.
It can absorb substantial amounts of damage while delivering powerful attacks of its own.
More importantly, Crushers can regenerate, creating pressure for squads to finish them quickly instead of spreading their damage across several targets.
Together, the two enemies give players very different problems to manage during Illuminate operations.
The Level Cap Effectively Expands to 300
Long-term players also have considerably more progression to chase.
Devoid of Liberty opens up 300 ranks, accompanied by additional rank titles.
That is particularly relevant for veterans who had already pushed through the earlier progression system.
Players who continued earning experience after reaching the previous cap may also find that their accumulated progress immediately pushes them through some of the new ranks.
The expanded system gives Arrowhead considerably more room to reward players who have spent hundreds of hours fighting the Galactic War.
SEAF Troops Can Finally Fight Alongside Your Squad
Players are not entering the Void alone.
Arrowhead has upgraded the role of SEAF troops, which can now arrive by dropship and actively assist Helldivers during operations.
Different soldiers can fill different roles.
Arrowhead has shown a squad leader, medic, rifleman and heavily armed specialist, with the latter carrying equipment including the MG-43 Machine Gun and EAT anti-tank weapon.
SEAF soldiers can follow players toward objectives and provide combat support, while medics can use stims to keep the squad alive.
And because this is Helldivers, players can also salute, shake hands with or hug their new allies.
The Community Has Until August 18 to Kill 500 Million Enemies
The PlayStation Plus launch also comes with a community-wide objective.
Helldivers players are being challenged to eliminate 500 million enemies by August 18.
If the community reaches the target, four Helldivers-themed PlayStation avatars will be unlocked.
It is a smart piece of timing from Sony and Arrowhead.
PlayStation Plus is likely to introduce a large number of new recruits at exactly the same time as existing players have a reason to return for Devoid of Liberty.
Real-World Helldivers Rewards Are Now Tied to In-Game Progress
Sony has also launched the Helldivers 2 Super Merch program.
The idea is unusual: completing specific achievements in the game makes certain physical merchandise available for purchase.
One of the first rewards is the Private Teddy Snuggles Plush, unlocked by playing 75 missions before February 28, 2027.
Once eligible, players can purchase the plush for $40, with the current store listing allowing qualifying users to place an order until March 31, 2027.
A physical Hell Commander medal is also tied to progression, with Level 100 used as its unlock requirement.
The important distinction is that these are not free achievement rewards.
Players complete the requirement to gain permission to buy the corresponding collectible.
Warhammer 40,000 Arrives on the Same Day
August 12 is even busier because Arrowhead has also launched the Helldivers 2 x Warhammer 40,000: Castellan’s Creed Legendary Warbond.
The crossover draws heavily from the Cadian Kasrkin, elite troops from Warhammer 40,000’s Astra Militarum.
It includes new armor, weapons and vehicle patterns.
Unlike Devoid of Liberty, the Warbond is not simply included with PlayStation Plus. It requires Super Credits and game progression to unlock.
That means newcomers joining through PS Plus receive the full Helldivers 2 base game and the free Devoid of Liberty update, while premium Warbond content remains separate.
Devoid of Liberty Gives New Players a Very Different Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 is no longer the same game that launched in February 2024.
The Galactic War has expanded through new factions, major story developments, new weapons, Warbonds and collaborations, while the game itself has now spread beyond its original PS5 and PC launch to Xbox Series X|S.
Devoid of Liberty pushes that evolution further.
The Illuminate are no longer simply another enemy faction. The Void gives Arrowhead a framework for changing planets, introducing mutated creatures and building a more unsettling section of the Galactic War around them.
At the same time, 300 ranks, stronger SEAF support and new mission mechanics give established players reasons to return.
For PlayStation Plus subscribers, the timing is difficult to beat.
Helldivers 2 enters the Game Catalog just as one of its biggest new story arcs begins, meaning a fresh wave of recruits is arriving at exactly the moment Super Earth is preparing to push into its most dangerous territory yet.
