Hell Clock Review – Rogue-Like ARPG Demo With Depth, Custom Builds, and Boss Rush Floors

Hell Clock Beta doesn’t feel like a demo. With over 14 floors, dozens of relics, an upgradeable passive tree, and full builds that mirror full-fledged ARPGs, this Steam demo hooks hard. It’s not just a quick test—it’s a polished showcase of gameplay, systems, and longevity. Developed by Rogue Snail, Hell Clock is launching June 18 on PC (Steam), blending action RPG combat with a dark fantasy take on Brazil’s War of Canudos—its free demo is available now.

The first thing that hits hard is the humor. The developers label this an “Exile-like” instead of a Diablo clone. That’s a clear nod to Path of Exile veterans and a jab at genre naming conventions. And honestly, it fits. Hell Clock mixes the ARPG identity of PoE, the fast pace of Hades, and a relic system that would feel at home in Supergiant’s roguelike.

Visuals and Performance Feel Borderlands Meets Darkest Dungeon

While some players have likened Hell Clock’s art style to Torchlight, the real comparison might be somewhere between Borderlands and Superfuse, with a splash of Darkest Dungeon’s shading. It’s cartoonish, colorful, and clean. Performance is smooth, animations are responsive, and it runs well even in chaos.

The vacuum loot pickup is also a quality-of-life win—no gear clicking, just pure movement and flow.

Customization Is Way Beyond What You’d Expect in a Demo

Hell Clock opens with more character customization than most early access titles. You get traditional gear slots—helmet, gloves, rings, weapons—but the real star is the relic system.

Relics define builds, with variables like damage multipliers, conditional effects, and build synergies (e.g. spin-to-win + bleed + lightning conversion). Duplicates aren’t useless either—each roll offers different affixes. Relics can be upgraded, too, giving long-term depth and grind incentive even in demo form.

Combine that with a multi-page skillbook, an atlas-style passive tree called the Great Bell, and a shop hub, and it feels like a full loop. The bell system lets players upgrade everything from shield (conviction) to experience gain and blessing selection. Locked nodes in the demo hint at even more depth coming later.

Combat Is Fast, Build-Specific, and Boss-Focused

You’ll start every run from level one, with the Hell Clock ticking. Fail to complete your objectives before time runs out, and it’s game over. Luckily, you can toggle this for more relaxed runs. But the real fun is optimizing combat to beat the clock. The game is zoom-zoom fast. Combat mixes auto-attack spinning, mobility dashes, and layered skill triggers. The RF (righteous fire)-like build showcased in the demo feels both powerful and satisfying.

Bosses scale with progression, and every few floors offer either gear, relics, or major upgrades. The final demo boss—a giant sandworm—might wreck you even if you’re overleveled. But failure feeds progress through your bell system and unlocks new relics and shop options.

Red Portal System Adds Replay Variety

The red portal mechanic is key for long-term grind viability. You can spec into red portal frequency and skip previously beaten content, reducing repetition without sacrificing depth. This gives experienced players a faster grind while preserving earlier areas for experimentation or farming.

Should You Do It? : Optional, Not Essential

Hell Clock isn’t mandatory to try, but it’s absolutely worth your time if you’re into ARPGs or roguelikes. For a free demo, it offers a dense package of systems, synergies, and replayability. With the full release confirmed for June 18, floors, and relics, it could be a real gem in the genre.
