GTA 6 won’t be “wildly different” from GTA 5, Former Rockstar Dev Says

The build up in anticipation for the release of GTA 6 is seen in the gaming community after the record-breaking success of GTA 5. Speculations on how the game will compare and the innovations that will emerge for the upcoming release are going round already. However, a former developer from Rockstar Games shared his thoughts for GTA 6. Perhaps holding your horses back will do, as the upcoming title has no radical difference from the previous installment.

“Not Wildly Different” – What Does It Mean?

Obbe Vermeji worked for nearly 14 years as technical director at Rockstar Games shared thoughts on the upcoming release. He has played a significant role in programming games such as GTA 3, 4, San Andreas, and Vice City. In a YouTube interview, hosted by SanInPlay, Vermeji revealed he has no involvement with GTA 6’s development after his departure from Rockstar in 2009.

However, his extensive experience gives weight to his prediction that GTA 6 won’t be wildly different from GTA 5. He stated, “I think maybe people might be a little disappointed on the first day. But it’s still going to be the best game out there.”

Vermeij clarified that he doesn’t have insider leaks about the game. His observations are based on the reveal trailer and his understanding of game development processes.

Despite his caution about expecting radical changes, Vermeij expressed admiration for what he has seen. He was particularly impressed by the scene on the beach from the trailer, where individuals have their own unique animation. “That blows me away,” he remarked.

Vermeij also praised the game’s setting, saying, “I love the Miami vibe” and noting that it “suits GTA very well.” This echoes the excitement many fans have expressed about the game’s return to a Vice City-inspired location.

Familiar Gameplay, New Innovations

Although Vermeji’s insight might disappoint players who are anticipating a complete reinvention of the GTA formula, it’s worth considering what he might mean by the game not being “wildly different.”

Over decades of GTA releases, the core gameplay loop has remained relatively consistent since GTA 3. The missions are there along with the vast cityscape as you explore and cause mayhem in between story beats. The familiar structure of GTA games is what makes them appealing to many players of the title.

Yet, it doesn’t mean that there won’t be any innovations at all for GTA 6. The revealed trailer has already hinted at several new elements of the game that could substantially change GTA encounters and experiences.

  • The series’ first female protagonist: This change alone could alter the narrative tone and player experience in meaningful ways.
  • A deeper embrace of “Florida culture”:  Potentially offering a fresh perspective on the GTA world as poised to lean heavily into the unique atmosphere and eccentricities of the setting.
  •  Technological advancements: Better graphics, physics, and world simulation can be expected given the game’s current development for the latest gen consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series X|S).
  • Expanded online features: An engaging interaction in the virtual world between players may be included after the massive success of GTA Online. But this still needs confirmation from Rockstar Games.

Balancing Familiarity and Innovation

It isn’t bad to see familiarity especially for the game formula we came to love. The GTA 5 has reached success selling over 185 million copies across multiple platforms. Definitely one of the most successful video games of all time. An expanded and refined version of the GTA experience is more likely to be seen than a complete overhaul of the existing formula.

Set to release in Fall 2025, it’s important to already manage your expectations. The game is certain to push boundaries in some areas; however, it is likely to retain the core elements of the beloved GTA series.

Conclusion

As Vermeji predicts, it is still likely to be “the best game out there” upon release. Of course, Rockstar Games has been consistent in producing quality titles throughout the GTA series. While we will still have the typical GTA gameplay, it is best to look forward to the possible additions to the game features. The true test will lie in how it builds upon and refines the foundation laid by its predecessors. Whether longtime fans and newcomers alike would come and like the innovations made for the game.
