Grounded 2 Mounts, Omni Tool, and Biomes: What’s New in Early Access

Grounded 2 launches in early access on July 29, and it introduces sweeping changes to gameplay systems that differentiate it from the first game. Built on the foundation of Grounded One, this sequel expands nearly every core system while introducing entirely new mechanics. From rideable bugs to streamlined tools and class-based combat, the sequel takes the survival-crafting foundation of Grounded One and builds on it in bold ways. Here’s a look at five standout features in Grounded 2.

Mount System Adds Bug Companions and Utility Perks

At launch, players can tame and ride two confirmed bug mounts: the Red Worker Ant and the Orb-Weaver Spider. Each has unique strengths tied to traversal, combat, and utility.

The Red Worker Ant functions like a resource hauler. It assists with carrying materials and can summon two additional ants to aid in battle. It’s ideal for those focused on building and gathering.

The Orb-Weaver Spider, on the other hand, plays a more tactical role. It can create defensive webs, slow enemies, and cross exclusive spider web bridges inaccessible without it. This mobility makes it essential for certain exploration paths.

Importantly, the difficulty setting determines what happens when a mount dies. On normal mode, mounts respawn at base after a cooldown. On higher difficulties, death is permanent—adding real stakes to every encounter.

Omni Tool Replaces Traditional Tools

One of the most unexpected changes is the removal of Grounded One’s standard tools—axe, shovel, hammer, and wrench. In their place is the Omni Tool, a single device that covers all resource gathering functions.

This tool not only simplifies the gear loadout but also frees up backpack space, enabling more room for looting. While players no longer need to swap tools, they must still upgrade the Omni Tool to gather higher-tier materials. Upgrades require scavenging specific resources and returning to base, echoing the old progression loop but with less inventory clutter.

This redesign is especially beneficial for exploration-heavy playstyles and removes much of the micromanagement tied to equipment switching.

Class-Based Combat Overhauls Gameplay

Grounded 2 introduces four combat archetypes: Warrior, Rogue, Ranger, and Mage. This shift aligns the game more closely with RPG progression and offers dedicated builds for a wide range of playstyles.

Each class synergizes with specific armor sets and weapons. Warriors may favor heavy armor and stamina-focused perks, while Rogues benefit from agility boosts and stealth-oriented gear. These builds can be further enhanced with mutations, encouraging players to specialize for co-op or solo roles.

Obsidian’s emphasis on RPG mechanics—including skill-based character builds and equipment customization—makes this a major departure from Grounded One’s more generalized approach to survival combat.

With all these updates, Grounded 2 feels more ambitious in every area. The new mounts, reworked tools, and combat options offer more ways to play than ever before. Obsidian’s decision to expand the world with fresh biomes and meaningful exploration rewards will keep players busy for a long time. Whether the goal is building a perfect base, uncovering hidden zones, or teaming up in co-op, there’s something for every type of player in this follow-up.
